Philadelphia FIGHT's Initiative to Enhance Syphilis Testing

As the United States grapples with a surge in congenital syphilis cases, Philadelphia FIGHT is stepping up its efforts to provide immediate access to rapid syphilis testing. The organization, collaborating with Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy, is implementing a series of community events aimed not only at expanding testing accessibility but also at promoting education around sexual health and prevention.

The Urgent Need for Action

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 4,000 cases of congenital syphilis were reported in 2024, representing a troubling rise of two percent compared to the previous year and a staggering 700 percent increase over the last decade. This condition occurs when a mother transmits the infection to her baby, which can lead to severe health consequences if left untreated. Despite a decrease in primary and secondary syphilis cases, congenital syphilis remains a grave public health concern, especially as it is largely preventable through early antenatal screening and treatment.

Rapid Testing and Community Engagement

On June 27, Philadelphia FIGHT held a pivotal community testing event in conjunction with KFF's National HIV Testing Day, where they provided free rapid tests for syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis C. The success of this event demonstrated a significant demand for syphilis testing, particularly among vulnerable groups, including pregnant women. The event featured the Syphilis Health Check™ rapid test, which offers results in just ten minutes and has been praised for its ease of use.

“People were relieved when they received results quickly, and it opened a dialogue about other health concerns,” said Maggie Webb, Outreach Manager for the PrEP Program at Philadelphia FIGHT. “The incorporation of syphilis testing into our services has challenged stigmas and encouraged conversations around safer sex practices.”

Following the success of the June event, a second testing initiative took place on September 17, where syphilis accounted for nearly 40% of tests administered.

Breaking Down Barriers

The strategic placement of testing events at community health centers has proved invaluable in addressing barriers to health care access. By operating outside the conventional clinical setting, Philadelphia FIGHT has made testing available to individuals who might otherwise face obstacles such as cost, stigma, or limited clinic hours.

This approach not only facilitates earlier detection and linkage to appropriate care but also supports the ongoing dialogue about sexual health, encompassing discussions around HIV and hepatitis C prevention.

Participants have shared stories of finding out about testing opportunities through community organizations, illustrating the effectiveness of targeted outreach within underserved populations. All participants were provided with information about further preventive care and health services.
