LG Takes a Stand for Student Mental Health
In a bold initiative to support mental health, LG Electronics USA has joined forces with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to enhance mental health resources at universities. This partnership aims to provide valuable funding to the host institutions of the 2026 NCAA Final Four - Indiana University, Indianapolis (IU Indy) and Arizona State University - granting each school a generous donation of $10,000.
Strengthening Mental Health Resource Accessibility
This financial support is crucial for enhancing on-campus mental health programs specifically catering to student-athletes who often face unique pressures and challenges. Since its partnership began in 2022, LG has provided over $2.5 million to various initiatives aimed at promoting the mental wellness of student-athletes, further amplifying its long-standing commitment to this vital aspect of student life.
Highlighting Mental Health at NCAA Final Four Weekend
As part of this initiative, a recent event featured a discussion with IU Indy student-athletes, where they engaged with WNBA free agent and NCAA Division 1 champion Lexie Hull. Hull shared her personal experiences and insights on balancing the rigors of athletics and academics while prioritizing mental wellness. Her engaging dialogue underscored the importance of mental health support for students navigating high-pressure environments.
“Sharing my journey with these young athletes was incredibly meaningful,” Hull said. “It’s essential for student-athletes to know there are resources available to support them.”
Building Community Support
Through these donations, both host schools can collaborate with NAMI On Campus, a program dedicated to dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health issues. The funding will help elevate awareness levels, create programming, and establish peer support mechanisms for students in need. This approach fosters a community environment conducive to addressing mental health openly and effectively.
Don Kwack, the President and CEO of LG Electronics North America, emphasized the importance of mental wellness among youth. “Mental health is a priority, especially for young adults. Our collaboration with NAMI enables us to create meaningful on-campus support for mental wellness initiatives,” he noted during the donation presentation at IU Indy.
Additionally, Dan Gillison, Jr., the CEO of NAMI, highlighted the role of camaraderie and community in university life. “With LG’s partnership, we aim to expand NAMI On Campus clubs and mental health resources in host cities like Indianapolis and Tempe,” he said, reinforcing the need for communal support among student-athletes.
Recognition of Coaches Supporting Mental Wellbeing
LG’s dedication continues through its LG Life's Good Coaches award, recognizing NCAA coaches who actively promote mental health awareness among their teams. This initiative honors coaches nominated by student-athletes and provides resources to their schools to reinforce mental health programs at collegiate athletic programs.
A Continuing Commitment
As part of its ongoing commitment to student mental health, LG also launched the ‘Transparent Conversations’ podcast series in 2022. This platform encourages candid discussions around the mental health challenges faced by student-athletes, further showcasing LG’s dedication to fostering an open dialogue on mental well-being.
