Connecticut Innovations' Remarkable Year in FY2026
Connecticut Innovations (CI), which operates as the strategic venture capital arm of the state, has emerged victorious in the fiscal year 2026 by generating a staggering
$66.5 million in cash proceeds. This monumental achievement underscores the strength and potential of Connecticut's innovation economy, which continues to attract substantial investment and attention.
The noteworthy amount is attributed to a series of landmark portfolio exits. Notably, two significant transactions stand out: the acquisition of
Halda Therapeutics by Johnson & Johnson for
$3.05 billion, and the acquisition of
Quantum Circuits Inc. by D-Wave Quantum for
$550 million. Additionally, the initial public offering (IPO) of
Veradermics raised
$256.3 million and was lauded as the best-performing biotech IPO at the time.
CI’s CEO, Matt McCooe, remarked, "This was a landmark year for Connecticut Innovations and for the state's innovation economy. The successes we've experienced with Halda Therapeutics and Veradermics signal the prosperous trajectory New Haven and Connecticut are on as they establish themselves as leaders in life sciences innovation globally."
In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026, CI invested approximately
$59.3 million in 75 early-stage companies and venture funds, leveraging an additional
$1.2 billion in outside capital. This reinforced CI's role as a vital player stimulating the state's venture ecosystem. Furthermore, CI has engaged in various initiatives, including the
third annual Tour de Connecticut, which showcased innovation across the state, and the
second annual Talent Fair, aimed at connecting aspiring innovators with CI’s portfolio companies eager to hire.
Another exciting initiative is the introduction of the
AI/Q Fund, which focuses on scalable commercial AI and quantum ventures. Gwen Cheni, director of the AI/Q Fund, expressed her enthusiasm about the acquisition of Quantum Circuits Inc. and remarked, "This marks an exciting milestone for Connecticut's quantum ecosystem. We recognize immense potential in the AI and quantum technology sectors, and our investment in outstanding founders heralds a new phase of innovation that promises lasting economic impact for our state."
Connecticut Innovations is committed to fostering growth through equity and debt investments, alongside providing strategic guidance and valuable partnerships for innovative businesses. Their proactive approach positions them as a cornerstone in nurturing Connecticut's entrepreneurship landscape. With these considerable investments and its impact over the past year, CI is charting a course toward a prosperous future.
As we move forward, the clear direction is to continue building on these successes. For innovative companies and startups looking at Connecticut as a hub for growth and collaboration, the future appears bright. CI's dedication to cultivating the state's burgeoning sectors, particularly in life sciences and technology, will undoubtedly enhance Connecticut’s reputation as a breeding ground for the next wave of groundbreaking advancements. Such initiatives not only benefit individual firms but also contribute robustly to the overall state economy, ultimately ensuring that Connecticut remains an attractive destination for aspiring and seasoned entrepreneurs alike.
