Gaianixx Aims for Next-generation Piezoelectric Materials with JST's Support

Introduction

Gaianixx, a startup born from the University of Tokyo, is on a mission to revolutionize the field of piezoelectric materials through innovative technology and strong governmental support. With backing from the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), the company aims to create highly efficient and cost-effective next-generation piezoelectric substrates that can meet the growing demand across multiple sectors.

Background on JST Support

The JST has officially decided to provide development support to Gaianixx under its A-STEP implementation support program for the fiscal year 2025. This initiative is geared towards supporting research outcomes that can be effectively realized in society. By providing funding, JST facilitates Gaianixx in developing superior intermediary films specifically designed for next-generation piezoelectric materials. The goal is to bring to market implementation technologies that excel not only in performance but also in affordability.

Growing Demand for Piezoelectric Devices

Recent years have seen a rapid expansion in the market for piezoelectric devices—ranging from sensors and actuators to various consumer electronics and medical instruments. These applications demand higher performance, reduced costs, and improved energy conversion efficiency. In response, advancements are being made in piezoelectric materials, such as lead-free piezoelectric ceramics and single crystal piezoelectrics, to satisfy this diverse need.

Technical Challenges Ahead

Historically, the challenge in producing functional thin films used in piezoelectric sensors and actuators has involved the method of crystallizing these films on substrates. Traditional epitaxial growth techniques often lead to discrepancies in lattice size between the substrate and the functional thin film. These discrepancies can cause distortion, cracking, and crystallographic defects within the functional film. Such defects can severely impair device performance, creating a significant barrier to innovation.
