Canon Achieves Top Rating as Supplier Engagement Leader by CDP 2025

Canon's Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Canon has been recognized for its outstanding efforts in collaborating with suppliers on climate change issues by being named a 'Supplier Engagement Leader' in the CDP 2025 Supplier Engagement Assessment for the fifth time, following its previous recognition in 2024. This prestigious rating is awarded by CDP, an international non-profit headquartered in the UK that evaluates the effective collaboration practices of companies with their suppliers concerning climate change.

The Supplier Engagement Assessment provides insights into how well companies engage their suppliers in emissions reduction efforts. Canon’s consistent recognition in this area aligns with its commitment to achieving a harmonious society that balances prosperous living with environmental preservation.

Goals for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Canon is actively pursuing environmental protection alongside its business operations, with a target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its product lifecycle—including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions—by 2050. Specifically, Canon aims to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 42% from 2022 levels by 2030 and Scope 3 (categories 1 and 11) emissions by 25% over the same timeline. These ambitious targets are set in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which encourages companies to establish science-based GHG reduction goals.

Collaborative Engagement with Suppliers

To achieve these goals, Canon is working closely with its suppliers through initiatives that promote GHG emissions reductions. This includes visualizing the GHG emissions associated with suppliers' operations and integrating low-GHG materials and components into the production process. Importantly, Canon ensures that real data provided by suppliers regarding GHG emissions from raw materials and components is integrated into the lifecycle GHG emissions assessment of its products. This collaboration extends to establishing a robust framework that reflects the emission reduction efforts made by suppliers in Canon’s calculations, thereby fostering a collective commitment to decarbonization across the entire supply chain.

To further enhance transparency and credibility, Canon’s Scope 3 GHG emission data is being assured by a third party, LRQA Limited, ensuring that its reduction strategies are genuine and effectively monitored.

Future Directions

As part of its dedication to sustainable practices, Canon will continue its collaborative efforts with suppliers, working towards comprehensive net-zero GHG emissions in its product lifecycle. The recognition from CDP is not just an accolade but a reflection of Canon's commitment to its corporate philosophy of 'coexistence,' illustrating how businesses can work hand in hand with suppliers to address crucial climate challenges. As the world faces pressing environmental issues, Canon’s proactive approach sets a benchmark that aligns business success with environmental stewardship.

Through these initiatives, Canon is not only paving the way for a sustainable future but also inspiring other corporations to engage their supply chains in meaningful climate action. The steps taken today will undoubtedly solidify the foundation for a greener tomorrow, as the company aims to lead in both technology and environmental responsibility.
