CNOOC Launches Production at Wenchang 9-7 Oilfield Development Project
CNOOC Limited, a key player in the global oil and gas industry, has recently announced the onset of production at its Wenchang 9-7 Oilfield Development Project, situated in the western Pearl River Mouth Basin. The project, which has a water depth of approximately 120 meters, underscores CNOOC's commitment to advancing offshore oilfield technology and sustainable practices.
This ambitious development includes a new and innovative drilling and production platform that integrates seamlessly with nearby existing facilities. CNOOC plans to commence operations with 25 strategically positioned development wells. This includes 18 production wells aimed at enhancing output, alongside 7 gas injection wells designed to improve recovery rates. Projections suggest that the project could achieve a plateau production level of about 12,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day by the year 2027.
The oil extracted from the Wenchang 9-7 site is categorized as light crude, which is favorable in terms of refining and marketability. CNOOC Limited is proud to emphasize its commitment to efficient resource utilization and sustainable development throughout the duration of this project. By leveraging innovative techniques like miscible gas flooding, the company is tackling the challenges typically associated with low permeability reservoirs, thereby enhancing oil recovery rates significantly.
Particularly noteworthy is the incorporation of green technologies in the development of the Wenchang 9-7 Oilfield. This project marks the first time an offshore low permeability oilfield has utilized miscible gas flooding, which is a breakthrough in maximizing the output from challenging reservoirs. Furthermore, CNOOC Limited is keen on the efficient recovery and utilization of associated gas. A comprehensive gas network has been established within the Wenchang Oilfields, ensuring that pipelines are interconnected and that the recovery of flare gas and waste heat is meticulously implemented.
One of the crowning achievements of the Wenchang 9-7 Oilfield Project is its commitment to zero flaring. This environmentally responsible initiative signifies a substantial advancement in the operational approach towards resource extraction. Additionally, this facility is equipped with an unprecedented 5MW offshore high-temperature flue gas organic Rankine cycle (ORC) power generation unit – a pioneering technology expected to generate around 40 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This innovation is projected to lead to a remarkable reduction of approximately 33,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, establishing a new benchmark for sustainability within the industry.
CNOOC retains full ownership of the Wenchang 9-7 Oilfield Development Project and acts as its operator. The company remains steadfast in its resolve to foster innovation while maintaining a strong focus on environmental stewardship and sustainability.
As the world moves towards a greener future, CNOOC’s strategic initiatives in offshore oil production reflect not just a business commitment, but also a crucial step towards minimizing the environmental impact associated with traditional oil extraction methods. This development is thus not only poised to make a substantial economic impact but also resonates with the evolving global emphasis on sustainable energy practices. Looking forward, CNOOC aims to continue setting industry standards through its innovative approaches and commitment to sustainable development across all its operations.
