Since 2012, Global Electronics has been developing body movement sensors like Siesta BeBe, aimed at monitoring infants during nap times. This initiative was rooted in addressing social concerns, such as the shortage of childcare workers and the increasing number of children on waiting lists for childcare facilities. The dual need for improving the safety of children while easing the pressure on caregivers became starkly evident.

Feedback from various childcare professionals highlighted urgent concerns around water-related accidents during playtime. Parents and educators expressed their desire for a more robust monitoring system beyond napping to include water play, signaling an alarming gap in safety measures. The design and development of AQUA BUDDY™ presented unique challenges, notably in the detection of diverse movements that children make while swimming or playing. Collaborating with Kodomo no Mori—an organization based in Kunitachi, Tokyo—Global Electronics undertook extensive field trials to collect data on children’s activities and to better understand the real-world monitoring scenarios. The team focused not only on detecting a range of movements but specifically on identifying five risk-prone dangerous postures.

AQUA BUDDY™ has undergone profound enhancements through feedback from caregivers, aiming to reduce risks that could arise from blind spots or fleeting accidents that occur unnoticed. This meticulous process ensured the device effectively identifies high-risk movements, alerting caretakers at critical moments.

Designed with an emphasis on minimal financial burden for facilities, AQUA BUDDY™ utilizes Bluetooth® technology to send alerts directly to smartphones. This feature allows for simple setup without needing extensive installations like surveillance cameras or communication infrastructure, making it adaptable in various environments.

The device is incredibly user-friendly. It consists of a clip that attaches to swim caps without complicated setup processes, reducing the burden on caregivers during daily activities or preparations.

Tokyo's Endorsement and Future Directions
