Introduction
In a significant initiative to enhance health services in Los Angeles County,
Visión y Compromiso has launched the MOVES program, which stands for Mobile Outreach for Vulnerable and Engaged Support. This program is a critical step towards expanding healthcare accessibility, thanks to the generous support of the
Centene Foundation and
Health Net.
Purpose and Goals
The MOVES initiative is designed to deploy mobile health units run by community health workers known as promotora. It focuses on underserved communities, providing access to health screenings, education, and social support services. Over the course of three years, the program is expected to benefit more than 10,000 individuals enrolled in Medi-Cal and those within the community, through partnerships with trusted local organizations.
Launch Ceremony
The official launch will be celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the City Hall of Pacoima on June 25, 2026. This event is set to spotlight the importance of mobile healthcare solutions in bridging the gap between healthcare and vulnerable populations.
Services Offered
The MOVES program aims to:
- - Provide essential health services aimed at improving comprehensive care and outcomes for over 10,000 Medi-Cal beneficiaries.
- - Support the Bold Goals initiative by the State of California's Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), addressing health disparities and promoting health equity.
- - Deploy mobile health units staffed by trained promotoras, a registered nurse, and a community outreach coordinator. These teams will offer free health screenings, education on managing chronic diseases, and access to specialized care as well as social support resources including food assistance and housing guidance.
- - Collaborate with community organizations, schools, health clinics, and other trusted partners.
- - Utilize data-driven strategies to pinpoint areas of social vulnerability and conduct real-time assessments of service usage, patient satisfaction, health outcomes, and referrals for social needs.
Community Impact
Maria Lemus, Executive Director of Visión y Compromiso, stated, "We believe that healthcare should reach people where they live, work, and build community. Through the MOVES program, communities can access comprehensive healthcare services and support for well-being. In doing so, we are expanding our commitment to elevate community-driven solutions and create a healthier Los Angeles for many years to come."
Dorothy Seleski, President of Medi-Cal at Health Net, emphasized that the mobile unit not only represents a key resource but also embodies a healthcare delivery model grounded in trusted local partnerships. "When we invest in approaches designed and sustained by communities, we do more than just increase access; we build a more reliable and connected system of care."
The Role of Promotoras
For the promotoras involved, the mobile unit offers renewed opportunities to connect residents with essential services and support. Jose García Lopez, a MOVES promotor, remarked, "Serving the community through the mobile unit means being able to bring support, guidance, and resources to individuals who often face barriers to accessing health services. This unit allows for a more accessible and person-centered care approach, creating a trusting environment where people feel heard and supported."
Conclusion
With clinical support from nurses, MOVES creates meaningful interactions and continuity of care, going beyond traditional outreach efforts. Instead of waiting for communities to navigate complex systems alone, the program brings trusted support directly to where people live.
Ultimately, through health education, preventative services, and connections to care, MOVES aims to foster healthier communities, honoring dignity, equity, and convenience.
