Unlocking Mobile Value: Huawei's Vision for an Intelligent AI Future

At the recently held Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 in Barcelona, Huawei's CEO of the ICT Business Group, Yang Chaobin, made an impactful address advocating for the tech industry's commitment to making artificial intelligence (AI) accessible to all. As the transformation into a tech-driven world accelerates, Yang emphasized the urgency of enhancing connectivity and maximizing the potential of 5G-Advanced (5G-A) technologies to support innovative AI applications and address the existing digital divide.

Yang's keynote kicked off with a bold assertion: "The intelligent era is coming fast." He acknowledged the surge of new AI applications, which are blossoming daily, signaling the time has arrived for the industry to harness the full power of 5G-A. He stressed the need for efficient utilization of new spectrum resources, particularly in the U6 GHz band, to generate new industry value and set the stage for the anticipated evolution to 6G technologies.

Addressing Digital Connectivity

As AI capabilities grow, the demand for mobile computing power rises exponentially, with the consumption of tokens in AI applications seeing a remarkable 300-fold increase over the past two years alone. This surging demand presents unprecedented opportunities within the mobile sector. However, Yang highlighted that the rapid advancement of AI applications has concurrently widened the digital gap, as over 300 million people remain unequipped with mobile broadband access.

To confront these challenges, Yang underlined that networks must transition away from a downlink-centric focus, ensuring ultra-high bandwidth availability for both uplink and downlink. This shift will facilitate multimodal data exchanges crucial for AI operations. Moreover, the necessity for secure, reliable connectivity cannot be overstated, with Yang advocating for ultra-low-latency connections required for real-time AI collaborations.

Strategic Industry Collaboration

In his remarks, Yang articulated the critical importance of collaboration among industry players regarding the adoption and effective use of 5G-A technologies. He noted that the coming five years present a unique window for mobile AI services to flourish, contingent on strategic investments in the evolving tech landscape. The execution of the 5G-A standardization, currently underway by the 3GPP, aims to ensure its capabilities are highly effective, particularly as the shift towards 6G draws nearer.

He elaborated on the progress of 5G-A, which has already achieved large-scale deployment across over 300 cities worldwide, with its capabilities spanning all frequency bands. However, he cautioned that new and refarmed spectrum resources are essential, especially in areas where C-band resources are minimal.

Innovative Inclusion Programs

Yang provided insight into Huawei's commitment to bridging the digital divide through innovative solutions. He shared examples such as the RuralStar initiative, which currently empowers 170 million individuals in 80 countries with mobile internet access. The DigiTruck program, aimed at providing digital skills training to rural students in Kenya, and the introduction of mobile medical services in Argentine villages further illustrate Huawei’s comprehensive approach to promoting digital inclusion.

As the session concluded, Yang rallied attendees by calling upon all industry stakeholders to work collaboratively towards the goal of commercializing 5G-A at scale, thereby enhancing their capabilities to meet the rising demands of emerging AI services. Furthermore, he insisted that this collective effort is imperative for advancing towards the future landscape of 6G.

MWC Barcelona 2026 runs from March 2nd to March 5th, showcasing major advancements in technology. Huawei's participation in this leading technology event reflects its commitment to shaping a future driven by innovation and intelligent connectivity.
