ASPAN Names Peter Pomilio as New Chief Executive Officer, Bridging the Future of Perianesthesia Nursing

ASPAN Welcomes New Leadership

The American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN), a pivotal organization in the realm of perianesthesia nursing, has announced the appointment of Peter Pomilio, MBA, CAE, as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective July 23, 2025. This strategic move comes following the retirement of long-time CEO Kevin G. Dill, who has dedicated three decades to the advancement of ASPAN.

Under Dill's stewardship, ASPAN transitioned operations from a management company to establish its own national office. This pivotal change led to a more streamlined governance structure and the creation of a robust financial foundation. The timing of Pomilio’s appointment is significant, as ASPAN aims to bolster its organizational capacity and enhance the perianesthesia nursing profession.

"We are extremely pleased to welcome Pete Pomilio as our new CEO," stated Ursula Mellinger, BSN, RN, CPAN, CAPA, President of ASPAN. Mellinger emphasized that this decision underscores ASPAN's commitment to progressive leadership in the field of perianesthesia nursing. Pomilio brings to the role a wealth of experience in managing professional associations, which is expected to introduce innovative initiatives that will reinforce ASPAN’s reputation as a leader in education, advocacy, and professional development.

Pomilio expressed his enthusiasm for this new chapter: "I am incredibly excited to join ASPAN and leverage my background from various nursing associations to support its mission." He acknowledged the solid foundation built by his predecessor Dill and conveyed his commitment to fostering the growth and evolution of the organization.

Background of Peter Pomilio

Bringing two decades of non-profit executive leadership experience, Pomilio has previously served as the CEO of the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing and the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates. His diverse experience includes a successful tenure as CEO for the American Board of Clinical Social Work and COO of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. Pomilio's proven track record of collaborating with boards to enhance membership growth, expand educational resources, and achieve strategic goals aligns perfectly with ASPAN’s mission to empower its nursing community.

Educationally, Pomilio holds an M.B.A. from DeVry University's Keller Graduate School of Management and a B.A. in psychology from Rutgers University. His active engagement in professional communities extends to serving on the Board of Directors of the Mid-Atlantic Society of Association Executives and holding the title of Certified Association Executive (CAE).

Currently residing in New Jersey with his family, Pomilio plans to operate from ASPAN's National Office in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. His leadership is anticipated to cement ASPAN’s role in the ever-evolving field of perianesthesia nursing, ensuring that the organization continues to be a linchpin for education, research, clinical practice expertise, and standards across the nation.
