VitalCore Launches Comprehensive Healthcare Services at Mecklenburg County Detention Center North

VitalCore has recently rolled out a complete healthcare operation at the newly established Mecklenburg County Detention Center North, often referred to as Jail North. This initiative not only addresses the growing demand for medical services within the correctional system but also provides critical support for an additional 200 inmate beds within Mecklenburg County’s detention facilities.

In collaboration with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, VitalCore successfully executed a series of strategic plans to ensure that the facility is well-equipped and staffed with the necessary healthcare resources. Sheriff Garry McFadden emphasized the significant effort put into the operation, describing it as a meticulously organized endeavor that reflected a dedication to safety and compassion throughout the transition process.

Unlike traditional operational transitions, the challenge for VitalCore was to set up healthcare services from scratch at Detention Center North, which lacked an existing medical inventory or any operational framework for healthcare. This endeavor involved the procurement of essential medical equipment, recruitment and training of healthcare professionals, as well as the development of clinical protocols for daily operations.

Sandra Hoover, Deputy Chief of Operations at VitalCore, remarked on the complexity of launching a new facility. She highlighted the importance of establishing the right infrastructure to ensure a safe environment for the residents. Originally opened in 1994, Jail North operated as an adult detention center before undergoing various transformations until its closure in 2022. The reopening of this facility has now alleviated overcrowding issues faced at the Detention Center Central, providing a more efficient framework for addressing the needs of inmates. Notably, priority was given to transferring residents who were actively involved in rehabilitative programs aimed at easing their reintegration into the community.

Sheriff McFadden expressed pride in the professionalism, dedication, and teamwork demonstrated by the detention officers, VitalCore medical staff, and the various support teams throughout the transition. He assured the public that the operation was executed with utmost regard for everyone's safety and wellbeing.

VitalCore successfully recruited and onboarded healthcare professionals, including Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), dental and behavioral health specialists, as well as medical providers. This comprehensive staffing plan is crucial for ensuring 24/7 healthcare services at the Detention Center North.
