CATL Unveils the World's Largest Energy Storage Validation Testbed



In a significant advancement for the energy sector, CATL has opened the Xiamen Energy Storage Validation Research Institute (ESVL), marking the establishment of the largest and most comprehensive platform for testing and validating energy storage systems globally. Officially commencing operations on May 28, 2026, this institute is set to lead the industry into a new era of rigorous validation that emphasizes real-world performance.

Comprehensive Infrastructure


Spanning an impressive 10 hectares and built with an investment of approximately RMB 3 billion (around $440 million), the ESVL is designed to function as an open infrastructure accessible to all stakeholders in the global energy storage sector. As the demand for reliable energy storage solutions skyrockets, the facility aims to bridge the growing gap between installed capacity and actual performance of energy storage systems.

Addressing Performance Gaps


Amidst the rapid expansion of energy storage—recognized as fundamental to the global energy transition—the industry faces challenges, with nearly one in five large-scale storage projects underperforming. The delay in grid connections when installing energy storage systems has also become a pressing concern, with 46.5% experiencing setbacks of more than two months. The traditional validation processes have largely centered on component-level testing, revealing the need for a more credible validation framework at the system and station level.

Rigorous and Real-World Validation


In his remarks, Dr. Wu Kai, Chief Scientist at CATL, emphasized the importance of scientific rigor as the energy storage industry enters the gigawatt era. He pointed out the necessity of honesty regarding equipment performance, respect for grid dynamics, and disciplined reporting of test outcomes. The ESVL serves to elevate industry standards and transition validation efforts to occur pre-delivery, ensuring reliable performance validation under actual operating conditions.

"ESVL is open to the global energy storage industry and engages with leading certification bodies such as TÜV SÜD, TÜV Rheinland, CGC, and CSA to offer widely recognized services through streamlined testing protocols," noted Dr. Chen Xiaobo, Head of ESVL. As energy storage systems become increasingly essential infrastructure, the independent, traceable, and practicably validated data from ESVL will aid regulators in making informed decisions, allow insurers to better assess risks, and assist financial institutions in evaluating energy storage as a credible asset class.

Advanced Laboratory Facilities


The ESVL houses five innovative laboratories, representing significant advancements for the energy storage sector:

  • - Grid Connection Laboratory: This state-of-the-art facility houses the world's first station-level grid integration laboratory, equipped with a 35-kV/100-MVA network simulator that sets new global testing benchmarks. This facility can test multiple large-scale energy storage containers simultaneously, simulating complex network conditions with excellence.

  • - High-Voltage Safety Laboratory: Covering a voltage range from 1 kV to 500 kV, this facility investigates the fundamental causes of fires and explosions under extreme conditions. It plays a key role in identifying safety limits for key components of energy systems.

  • - Thermal Safety and Combustion Laboratory: This laboratory boasts the first large-scale indoor combustion facility capable of conducting explosive tests simultaneously on nine large energy storage containers. It is critical for establishing safety distances and operational planning.

  • - Environmental Reliability Laboratory: Its capacity to simulate extreme environmental conditions—from -50 °C to 100 °C—ensures long-term performance validation of energy storage under diverse conditions such as desert heat and coastal salt spray.

  • - Electromagnetic Compatibility Laboratory: The first of its kind, it integrates a full 40-foot container capable of performing electromagnetic compatibility tests within real-world high-performance loading conditions, identifying risks prior to deployment.

Proven Track Record in Energy Storage


CATL's leadership in real-world validation of energy storage is rooted in extensive operational experience. Since 2016, CATL has expanded its energy storage capabilities, achieving notable milestones, including a 30-MW/108-MWh storage station in Jinjiang, China. By 2025, CATL's sales of energy storage batteries reached 121 GWh, capturing a global market share of 30.4% and maintaining its position as the world leader for five consecutive years.

Through sustained technological innovations and proven long-term project performance, combined with a robust validation capability at the system level, CATL is shaping a new trust framework for the global energy storage industry.
