Medtronic Welcomes Dr. Joon Lee to Its Board



Medtronic plc (NYSE: MDT), a leader in global healthcare technology, recently announced an important addition to its Board of Directors. As of June 18, 2025, Dr. Joon Lee, currently the CEO of Emory Healthcare, Inc., has been appointed as an independent director. Expertise in Healthcare


Dr. Joon Lee is not only a highly regarded interventional cardiologist but also brings over 25 years of experience in various leadership roles across healthcare. He has been instrumental in overseeing a comprehensive academic health system in Georgia that generates approximately $7.7 billion in annual revenue, managing 12 hospitals and employing over 29,000 staff.

Geoff Martha, Medtronic’s Chairman and CEO, expressed the board's excitement over Dr. Lee’s appointment. He noted that Dr. Lee’s vast experience as a clinical researcher and a physician executive will be invaluable. The board is particularly enthusiastic about Dr. Lee’s commitment to integrating data and technology into healthcare solutions, which aligns closely with Medtronic’s objectives.

A Proven Track Record


Dr. Lee's prior positions include serving as Executive Vice President and President of Physician Services at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). In these roles, he was responsible for the oversight of physician service operations, patient access, and ensuring high standards of patient experience. He also held the position of Vice Dean of Clinical Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

During his tenure at UPMC, Dr. Lee played a pivotal role in founding the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, further showcasing his dedication to advancing cardiac care initiatives. Between 2019 and 2021, he served as the Chief Medical Officer of UPMC Insurance Services, which managed a comprehensive $13 billion health insurance segment.

Dr. Lee holds multiple certifications, including one in cardiovascular disease from the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is also a fellow of both the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Coronary Angiography and Interventions. His extensive training includes a medical internship and a residency, as well as two specialized fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Additionally, he has served as an instructor at Harvard Medical School and holds a BA from Dartmouth College and an MD from Duke University.
