Rissho University Drone Academy Expands to Train More Pilots with New Simulators

Rissho University Drone Academy's Exciting Launch

In March 2026, Rissho University celebrated significant progress with its new Drone Academy, hosted at the Kumagaya campus, where 14 students successfully obtained their 2nd class Unmanned Aircraft Pilot licenses—marking a major milestone in aerial education. Looking ahead to the 2026 academic year, the university plans to widen its recruitment across all departments, signaling a commitment to expanding educational offerings in this cutting-edge field. The introduction of state-of-the-art simulators further enhances the opportunity for students to learn drone operation in safe, controlled environments.

Setting the Stage for Future Pilots

Rissho University's Drone Academy kicked off officially in 2025. Besides offering training, the academy aims to equip students with essential skills in aviation and data science, preparing them for potential careers in the growing drone industry. Notably, four faculty members from both the Department of Data Science and the Earth Environment Science Department are set to acquire their Unmanned Aircraft Pilot licenses, directly integrating their expertise into educational and research frameworks.

As part of its rigorous training schedule, the academy has received approval as a registered training organization by the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau in March 2025. This accreditation enables the university to conduct both theoretical and practical drone operation courses on campus, a unique offering that aligns educational standards with industry requirements.

Advanced Training with Innovative Technology

In February 2026, Rissho University integrated the latest simulator, the "SKY COACH X," developed by Nihon Musen Co., which allows students to train in a variety of challenging weather conditions without the risk associated with real flights. This advanced training facility not only enhances students' operational skills but is also anticipated to boost their success rate in achieving pilot qualifications. With the simulator's high-performance computing capabilities and realistic virtual environments, learners can experience operational challenges such as operating under heavy rain or strong winds, making their training robust and comprehensive.

Educator Insights and Future Plans

According to faculty members like Professor Tadao Matsuo of Data Science and Associate Professor Kazuki Aoki from Environmental Science, the expansion of drone utilization in society is creating numerous opportunities for licensed pilots. Graduates can expect a broader job market as industries increasingly adopt drone technology. Rissho University acknowledges the importance of resilience in education and is considering initiatives to support not just current students but also alumni through retraining programs for working professionals.

Furthermore, the university is looking to collaborate with local municipalities, including Shinagawa Ward and Kumagaya City, to serve as a regional hub for drone application. This initiative aims to bridge academia with local enterprises, fostering a community where drone technology can thrive and be effectively implemented across various sectors.

By leveraging educational resources and research-driven insights, Rissho University aspires to lead the way in the social implementation of drone technology, enhancing its potential for multiple applications and setting a benchmark for future educational institutions. With its ongoing efforts, Rissho University is not just building pilots but preparing its students to become innovators and leaders in the ever-evolving landscape of drone technology.

The Cutting-Edge Simulator Experience

As part of its state-of-the-art facilities, Rissho University has introduced four units of the SKY COACH X simulator. These systems incorporate high-performance computers and controllers that allow students to engage in practical training that mirrors real-world conditions. This initiative marks the first of its kind in the nation, demonstrating Rissho University's commitment to innovation in education.
