Nicole A. Theodosiou Appointed New Director of Education at MBL

Marine Biological Laboratory Welcomes Nicole A. Theodosiou



The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), located in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, has recently announced the appointment of Dr. Nicole A. Theodosiou as the new Burroughs Wellcome Director of Education. Dr. Theodosiou is set to join the MBL on September 8, bringing with her over 20 years of experience in science education and academic leadership.

Dr. Theodosiou comes to MBL from Union College, where she held various significant roles aimed at enhancing curriculum innovation and faculty development, particularly within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) sector. Her most recent position there was as the Special Projects Director for Initiatives in Pedagogy Course Design. She has a strong track record of developing interdisciplinary educational programs, promoting faculty growth, and advancing innovative teaching methodologies.

Throughout her career, she directed initiatives such as the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Inclusive Excellence Initiative, which focused on creating inclusive environments for learning and research. Additionally, Dr. Theodosiou's leadership has impacted numerous undergraduate programs in biochemistry and biology, reinforcing her expertise in the scientific field.

At MBL, Dr. Theodosiou will lead a diverse array of educational programs, including the globally recognized Advanced Research Training Courses (ARTCs) and various programs designed for undergraduate and high school students. This role is essential in supporting MBL’s mission of advancing biological discovery through both research and education.

The significance of educational initiatives at MBL has remained a central focus since the institution's founding in 1888. According to MBL Director Nipam H. Patel, “Nicole brings an exceptional blend of scientific knowledge and educational leadership, alongside a strategic vision that aligns perfectly with our goals.” Dr. Patel emphasized that Theodosiou's dedication to experiential learning and innovative program development makes her an invaluable addition to the team at MBL.

Dr. Theodosiou has a longstanding relationship with MBL, having participated in the Laboratory’s Gene Regulatory Networks course in 2015.
