Discover the Importance of Sustainable Living with Tokyu Hotels and the 'Mottainai Grandma' Cooking Event

Embrace Sustainability with 'Mottainai Grandma'

Tokyu Hotels & Resorts Co., Ltd. is set to host a unique event titled “Learn Sustainable Living with Mottainai Grandma: Cooking Class” on August 24, 2025, at the Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu. This engaging experience aims to educate families about the critical issues of sustainability, particularly the importance of minimizing waste – a core theme of the beloved children’s book, Mottainai Grandma.

The book, authored by Mariko Shinju, teaches children about valuing and making the most out of resources. The protagonist, known as Mottainai Grandma, introduces the concept of waste through captivating stories and adventures, encouraging youngsters to appreciate food and possessions rather than discarding them thoughtlessly. The stories utilize humor and adventure to convey deep messages about responsibility and gratitude for the resources we have.

In line with the sustainable policy Tokyu has embraced since 2019, which aims to create hotels that are kind to the planet, community, and individuals, the event will be divided into an interactive cooking class and educational workshops designed for families. Participants will explore the significance of efficient resource use while having fun cooking together.

The first event will take place at the Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu and will be one of many similar events held throughout the year in various Tokyu Hotels locations across Japan. Following the Shibuya event, a second iteration is planned for November 3, 2025, at the Shin-Osaka Esaka Tokyu REI Hotel.

Event Details

The centerpiece of the cooking class will focus on creating icing cookies made from vegetable scraps, demonstrating how even the most minor kitchen leftovers can be transformed into delightful treats. Professional pastry chefs and hotel staff will guide participants through the process, providing a hands-on, enjoyable learning experience for all ages. Children will be equipped with chef hats and coats, adding to the fun as they immerse themselves in the role of a chef. Not only will participants get to take their beautifully decorated cookies home, but they will also receive the recipes so they can recreate the experience with their family once more.

In addition to the cooking activity, participants will attend an educational session on food sustainability, discussing how the theme of “Mottainai” influences our everyday choices, particularly pertaining to food consumption. The event will culminate in a special meal prepared by the hotel's head chef, showcasing original course dishes inspired by the principles of waste reduction and resource appreciation.

As a memento of their participation, children will receive exclusive Mottainai Grandma themed stickers and completion certificates, celebrating their commitment to learning about sustainability.

This event is particularly suitable for summer vacation science projects, encouraging families to engage in discussions about ecological responsibility and how they can contribute toward a sustainable society.
