American Skin Association Welcomes Steven A. Rosenberg

On January 12, 2026, the American Skin Association (ASA) announced a significant addition to its Board of Directors: Dr. Steven A. Rosenberg, MD, PhD. Recognized as a pioneer in the field of cancer immunotherapy, Dr. Rosenberg's appointment is expected to greatly enhance ASA's mission centered around skin health advocacy, research, and education.

About Dr. Steven A. Rosenberg

Dr. Rosenberg is widely acknowledged for his transformative contributions to cancer treatment, particularly through immune-based therapies. As the Chief of the Surgery Branch at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), he has overseen numerous groundbreaking studies, establishing new paradigms for treating advanced malignancies. To date, he has authored over 1,200 scientific publications, achieving an exceptional h-index of 222, illustrating his profound impact on the field of biomedical research. His revolutionary work with tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) has led to sustainable complete remissions for patients suffering from metastatic melanoma and other aggressive solid tumors.

Moreover, Dr. Rosenberg's pioneering spirit can be seen in his laboratory’s historic human gene transfer experiments—a groundbreaking step in the evolution of gene therapy. The combination of his deep scientific understanding and extensive clinical experience positions him to bring invaluable insights to ASA.

Strengthening ASA's Mission

Howard P. Milstein, the ASA Chairman, expressed enthusiasm about Dr. Rosenberg joining the board, emphasizing that his dedication to scientific discovery and remarkable medical contributions will greatly aid ASA's efforts in addressing skin diseases. With skin disorders affecting over 100 million Americans—accounting for approximately one-third of the U.S. population—Dr. Rosenberg’s experience is expected to be a game-changer in advancing awareness, research, and treatment for conditions such as melanoma, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis.

Dr. James Krueger, ASA's President, echoed this sentiment, stating that Dr. Rosenberg's leadership in immunotherapy will significantly support ASA’s ongoing endeavors in research and education aimed at improving the lives of those affected by skin disorders.

Current Research Focus

Dr. Rosenberg’s research involves developing advanced adoptive cell therapies, including genetically engineered lymphocytes. These innovative techniques have exhibited promising clinical outcomes for patients with various forms of cancer, including melanoma, lymphomas, and sarcomas. His ongoing research aims to deepen our comprehension of the immune system's response against cancer cells, leading to the creation of more effective immunotherapies.

Academic Accomplishments

Dr. Rosenberg earned his Bachelor of Arts and Medical degree from Johns Hopkins University. He then continued his education with a PhD in Biophysics from Harvard University, focusing his dissertation on erythrocyte membrane proteins. Besides his leadership role at the NCI, he holds positions as a Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, a Professor at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and a Foreign Adjunct Professor at Sweden's Karolinska Institutet Department of Laboratory Medicine.
