Walking Into Summer: A Juneteenth Initiative
In a vibrant initiative titled
Walking into Summer, Black Girl Vitamins has taken strides to celebrate Juneteenth by promoting exercise, wellness, and community care among Black women. The campaign, which aims to collectively achieve
19 million steps, does not just focus on physical movement; it embodies a spirit of resilience and unity. The essence of this campaign is rooted in honoring the legacy of Dr. Opal Lee, an advocate whose efforts played a pivotal role in making Juneteenth a recognized national holiday.
The journey began in
Greenville, South Carolina, where Black girls and women gathered to reconnect with their community and promote wellness through walking. Each participant is encouraged to embrace intentional movement as a way of honoring their own health, while also paying homage to the historical significance of Juneteenth.
Jennifer Juma, the Chief Strategy Officer of Black Girl Vitamins, articulated the mission beautifully: "Wellness is a form of liberation and community care. For us, movement is more than exercise; it is care, expression, and liberation." This reflects the profound understanding that for many in the Black community, walking serves not only as a physical activity but as a healing and empowering practice.
The campaign includes walks held across various notable cities, each with a goal to gather thousands of participants. Here’s a glimpse into the schedule for the Walking into Summer campaign:
