LG Display Achieves Milestone in Blue Phosphorescent OLED Technology Expansion

LG Display Achieves Commercialization of Blue Phosphorescent OLED Panels

In a groundbreaking move, LG Display, a leading name in display technology, has announced it is the first company in the world to verify the performance of blue phosphorescent OLED panels at a commercialization level. This exciting achievement is a major leap towards realizing what has been termed the 'dream OLED,' a term that signifies the full potential of OLED technology.

Understanding Phosphorescence in OLED

OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diodes) technology primarily utilizes two light-emitting methods: fluorescence and phosphorescence. Fluorescence is the more commonly understood process, converting electricity into light instantly but with a maximum efficiency of only 25%. In contrast, phosphorescence temporarily stores electrical energy, achieving a remarkable 100% luminous efficiency while consuming less than a quarter of the power used by fluorescence.

Despite its advantages, achieving blue phosphorescence has proven extremely challenging. For over twenty years, researchers struggled to harness this technology, especially due to the short wavelength and high energy requirements associated with blue light. It wasn't until LG Display developed a hybrid two-stack tandem OLED structure that this challenge began to be overcome.

Innovative Technology Behind the Breakthrough

The innovative design features a lower stack dedicated to blue fluorescence paired with an upper stack utilizing blue phosphorescence. This clever combination preserves the stability observed in fluorescent panels while significantly reducing power consumption—approximately 15% less than existing models. Notably, LG Display has not only surpassed technical hurdles but has also confirmed the commercial viability of this product using rigorous evaluation methods across mass production lines.

The company's partnership with Universal Display Corporation (UDC) has played a pivotal role in verifying the functionality and practical use of blue phosphorescent OLED technology. With patents filed for this technology in both South Korea and the United States, LG Display is positioning itself as a leader in the display technology sector.

Upcoming Showcase at SID Display Week 2025

LG Display plans to unveil a prototype featuring its blue phosphorescent OLED technology at the SID Display Week 2025, the premier event in the display industry, scheduled for May 11th in San Jose, California. This demonstration will focus on a small to medium panel suitable for a range of IT devices, including smartphones and tablets. As demand rises for high-definition and energy-efficient products—particularly in sectors like AI computing, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR)—the implications for blue phosphorescent technology are vast.

In a statement regarding this milestone, Soo-young Yoon, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display, commented, "The successful commercialization of blue phosphorescence technology, which has been called the final piece of the 'dream OLED' puzzle, will become an innovative milestone towards the next generation of OLED. We expect to secure a leading position in the future display market through blue phosphorescence technology."
