Revolutionizing Sustainability: The Creation of MILK BAG by Meiji and Partners

Introduction

In a remarkable initiative, Meiji Co., Ltd. joins forces with Ukihano Takara Co., Ltd. and ACALI to launch a unique upcycled product known as the "MILK BAG." This innovative bag is crafted from the cartons of their popular "Meiji Oishii Milk" by seniors aged 75 and above. Scheduled for sale on Makuake starting March 9, 2026, this project aims to promote sustainability and create job opportunities for elderly individuals in Japan.

Why MILK BAG?

The MILK BAG serves multiple purposes, meaning it does more than just function as a bag. It showcases the durable materials of milk cartons, emphasizing their value as a resource that can contribute to a sustainable society. With the current global emphasis on circular economies, the importance of recycling carton packaging has come to the forefront. In Japan, carton recycling began in 1984, but the recycling rate remains low at approximately 38.9%. By comparison, PET bottle recycling rates have surged to over 91.9%. Thus, the MILK BAG seeks to elevate the status of paper cartons and encourage their continued use.

The Collaboration

This project is a collaborative effort among three entities:
1. Meiji - proposes measures for upcycling the milk cartons.
2. Ukihano Takara - utilizes the knowledge and skills of women over 75 to create and sell these bags.
3. ACALI - manages the design and oversight of the project through renowned milk carton artist, Milk Paku Ko.

The craftsmanship is particularly significant as it engages elderly women, referred to as "baachan," who contribute their traditional skills and life experiences in the production process, fostering not only a sense of purpose but also providing them with a source of income.

Product Details

The MILK BAG is priced at 12,500 yen (tax included at 13,750 yen) and only 200 pieces will be offered in the initial sale. Each bag is handcrafted, ensuring that every piece carries its history and story. The initiative not only focuses on recycling but aims to inspire consumers through sustainability, creating a shared value system.

Raising awareness about the environmental issues surrounding paper carton recycling and the benefits of upcycling, the project sets forth an impactful message to society. By empowering elderly creators and promoting sustainable practices, it seeks to enhance the importance of paper cartons as vital resources.

Future Goals

Looking forward, Meiji and its partners aim to continue exploring and expanding sustainable initiatives linked to their products. Through continual consumer engagement, they plan to illustrate the valuable contribution of paper cartons, advocating for further development towards a more sustainable society. The combination of creativity, sustainability, and community welfare encapsulates the essence of the MILK BAG project, fostering a collective effort for a greener future.
