William W. Rowley Honored with 2026 Horatio Alger Award
The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans has announced that William W. Rowley, the esteemed Chairman and Founder of Healthnetwork Foundation, will receive the prestigious 2026 Horatio Alger Award. This accolade is presented annually to leaders who have triumphed over adversity and who contribute significantly to educational and philanthropic efforts. Rowley will join a distinguished group of ten other honorees recognized for their resilience, determination, and achievement.
For over 79 years, the Horatio Alger Award has honored individuals who demonstrate exceptional success in the face of challenges while tirelessly supporting the education of young people. Rowley, hailing from Middlefield, Ohio, was raised in a predominantly Amish community which imbued him with a strong sense of community values. His transition to a larger town in ninth grade presented new challenges, fueling his determination to adapt and thrive.
Rowley pursued higher education at Miami University in Ohio, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science, subsequently joining his father's business. As CEO of Mercury Plastics, Inc., Rowley drove the company’s growth significantly, eventually purchasing it after decades of leadership. Under his tenure, he graduated from Harvard Business School's Owner/President Management program and gained recognition as Northeast Ohio Entrepreneur of the Year.
In 1991, Rowley founded the Healthnetwork Foundation, initially known as the Inventory of Skills Foundation. The organization aims to connect business professionals with top hospitals and physicians, while also channeling donations into vital medical research and recognizing outstanding clinicians. Rowley's leadership has expanded the foundation to over 8,000 members, supporting an average of twenty families daily in navigating healthcare.
Expressing his sentiments, Rowley stated, "Growing up in a small farming town taught me early on how important community is, and that lesson has stayed with me throughout my life. I hope my legacy reflects a deep commitment to helping those in need and recognizing the incredible work of our doctors—that's the footprint of the Healthnetwork Foundation." He emphasized his eagerness to empower future generations through his membership in the Horatio Alger Association, aspiring to open doors for others.
Rowley's philanthropic endeavors extend beyond the Healthnetwork Foundation. He has garnered numerous accolades, including YPO's Hickok Distinguished Service Award and the Steve D. Bullock Humanitarian Award for his impactful contributions to the Cleveland community. His influence reaches further as he serves on the boards of several institutions including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, reflecting his dedication to community enrichment through various avenues.
James F. Dicke II, Chairman and CEO of Crown Equipment Corporation, praised Rowley, stating, "Bill Rowley's life and career are a testament to resilience, dedication, and generosity. His commitment to helping others and giving back to the community is inspiring. The Association is proud to welcome him as a member, where his story and leadership will continue to inspire young people to pursue their dreams."
Rowley, along with the 2026 member class, will be formally inducted into the Horatio Alger Association during its annual ceremonies in Washington, D.C., in April. This event coincides with the Horatio Alger National Scholars Conference, where over 100 students will have the opportunity to engage with members and explore the rich history of the capital.
The Horatio Alger Association, established in 1947, fosters a belief that hard work, honesty, and determination empower individuals to overcome adversity and achieve their dreams. The organization is committed to providing need-based scholarships to deserving students to help them pursue higher education and achieve their potential. In 2026 alone, it plans to award $19 million in scholarships to approximately 1,800 students across the United States and Canada.
