Duke Energy Foundation Supports Florida Veterans with $50,000 Grants for Memorial Day

As Memorial Day approaches, a time to honor those who have served in the military, the Duke Energy Foundation has taken a significant step to support Florida veterans by awarding a generous sum of $50,000 to five charitable organizations. This initiative is part of the Foundation's larger America250 project, designed to commemorate the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence. The focus is on helping veterans transition successfully to civilian life, providing them with the necessary job readiness skills and resources.

Melissa Seixas, the state president of Duke Energy Florida, highlighted the company's long-standing commitment to providing career opportunities for veterans. "We recognize the loyalty, integrity, and high-tech skills veterans bring to any workforce," she stated, emphasizing the importance of enabling these individuals to find meaningful professions after their service.

The grants allocated as part of this initiative set out to make high-impact investments to directly benefit the veterans' community. For instance, the Foundation for Seminole State College's initiative 'Mission Finish Line' received $15,000 to enhance networking and career development for veteran students. This will facilitate access to employment fairs, internships, and job-related seminars throughout the nation.

Additionally, Friends of Palm Harbor Troop 26 has been granted $7,500 to improve local facilities by making them ADA-compliant, ensuring they serve as a welcoming meeting space for young Scouts often led by active service members and veterans. This initiative embodies the commitment to inclusivity and recognizes the ongoing contributions of veterans in local youth programs.

With the same amount of funding, $7,500 will be dedicated to Gulf Coast Jewish Family and Community Services. This grant will assist honorably discharged veterans as they navigate their transitions from military to civilian roles by offering personalized coaching and skills development through the Tampa Bay Job Links program.

Heart of Florida United Way also benefitted from a $15,000 grant to expand its 'Mission United' efforts, aiming to provide coordinated workforce development and essential digital access services to veterans and their families in Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties.

Lastly, the Taylor County Veterans Memorial Park received $5,000 for the establishment of new monuments commemorating the contributions of veterans who have served in the region. This initiative aims to expand the park as a lasting tribute to those who have defended our country.

Responses from representatives of the funded organizations reflect gratitude and enthusiasm for the support provided by Duke Energy. John Gyllin, vice president of the Foundation for Seminole State College, expressed, "Duke Energy's support is making a significant impact on our veteran students by helping them on their path to achieving meaningful career goals."

Similarly, Janice Shermetaro from Friends of Palm Harbor Troop 26 noted, "We are grateful for this partnership, allowing us to develop positive values among our youth while honoring those who served in the military."

Duke Energy's commitment to the veteran community doesn't end with this funding. This recent round of grants is part of a broader $1 million investment under the America250 initiative, which aims to support various community-driven projects that celebrate the country's heritage. Previous awards have already been announced, illustrating the ongoing commitment to bolstering communities across Florida.

With such significant actions leading up to Memorial Day, Duke Energy continues to exemplify corporate responsibility and civic duty, not just by recognizing the sacrifices of veterans, but through tangible support that directly aids their transition into civilian life. The Foundation's focus on navigating these challenges affirms its strategic role in enhancing the quality of life for veterans and their families throughout Florida and beyond.

Duke Energy and its Foundation remain dedicated to fostering a strong community-supported future, as they further invest in initiatives that honor the commitment and sacrifices made by those who serve.
