Creating the Future of Expo Together: COMMONs Launches a Collaborative Publishing Project

COMMONs: A Co-Creation Publishing Project for the Future

The common vision of preserving and continuing the vibrant culture born from the Osaka-Kansai Expo is now a step closer to reality. COMMONs, a non-profit organization led by Creative Director Kota Hikichi, is set to launch a collaborative publishing project named 'COMMONs' ver.1.0. This initiative will kick off with a crowdfunding campaign on For Good, starting on April 13, 2026, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of the Expo's opening.

As the official records of the Expo capture only a fraction of the creativity, stories, and culture generated, this project aims to encapsulate the myriad narratives from creators, architects, artists, and everyday citizens alike. Planned as a participatory publication, it invites numerous supporters to partake in the creative process, ensuring that the legacy of the Expo extends far beyond its concluding date.

Maintaining the Momentum

For Hikichi, continuing the Expo's legacy is crucial. He believes that the creative sparks ignited during the Expo are not bound to its timeline but should persist and flourish. 'This project is about creating a platform where we sustain the energy of the Expo and transform it into memories and narratives that will fuel our collective future,' he states. The goal is to craft a book that not only records but also celebrates the secondary stories of this global event that may be overlooked.

The project aims to secure 100 million yen in funding via a stretch goal format, beginning on April 13, 2026, and ending on July 12, 2026. The collected contributions will guide new developments, with each financial milestone unlocking higher goals like special editions of the book and community events.

About the Book

The forthcoming book, 'COMMONs' ver.1.0, is set to revolve around the theme 'POST EXPO,' featuring 25 core projects derived from the Expo and collecting 26 narratives that include personal experiences from visitors and locals captured through the '#MyExpoStory' initiative. Unlike the official records that primarily focus on outcomes, this book will document the creative processes, emotions, and community-driven culture that emerged, melding them together into a single narrative.

As this publication aims to serve not just as a retrospective but as a foundation for ongoing dialogue, it welcomes contributions from both supporters and non-supporters alike. Individuals are encouraged to share their own stories and memories, regardless of whether they participated in the Expo directly. This collaborative effort is crucial; the project can only succeed with broad public involvement.

Why Now? Why This Approach?

The Osaka-Kansai Expo sparked a wave of community creativity and culture, fostering shared experiences that must be safeguarded for future generations. COMMONs, established as a platform for preserving these legacies, connects diverse voices to ensure these memories aren't lost to time. By establishing a creative commons, the organization intends to generate an ecosystem where ideas and contributions can coexist and evolve.

Future Plans

With 'COMMONs' ver.1.0 at its core, the potential for future events and activities is immense. Initial releases include the digital edition of the book for a modest fee, while those wishing to delve deeper can join levels that provide behind-the-scenes access to the editorial process or participation in monthly meetings. Larger scale contributions are welcomed from corporations who wish to partner actively.

As a pivotal part of this initiative, an event will be held to celebrate the one-year mark of the Expo’s closing, transforming the memories captured in the book into fresh interactions and projects.

The Path Forward

Overall, the project is aimed at broader participation in common storytelling that honors the Expo's spirit, ensuring that the narratives will continue inspiring future generations. By embedding these stories in a published format, organizers hope they will serve as a reference and a source of wisdom when the Expo is remembered during future iterations. As Hikichi emphasizes, the heat of the past Expo remains alive, and with collective action, they can generate the next chapter together.

The journey to create 'COMMONs' ver.1.0 is an open invitation—join in, share, and together let’s weave the threads of our shared heritage into a lasting legacy. With the timeline set, contribution options available, and excitement in the air, COMMONs is on course for a meaningful collaborative journey into the future.
