Blacksmith Secures $45 Million Funding Round to Enhance Code Validation with AI Technology
Blacksmith, a cloud-based platform focused on code validation, has announced a successful $45 million Series B funding round led by Peak XV Partners. Existing investors, including Y Combinator and GV, also participated, bringing the company's total valuation to an impressive $550 million. This strategic financial boost comes at a critical juncture where demand for efficient code validation is surging due to the proliferation of AI-driven coding tools.
Since the beginning of the year, the number of Continuous Integration (CI) jobs utilizing Blacksmith has seen a steady increase of 5% to 10% week over week, propelled by the addition of new clients. The company has expanded its customer base significantly, jumping from around 800 to more than 6,000 businesses, including notable names like Supabase, Clerk, Ashby, and Mercury. This rapid growth highlights the increasing reliance on Blacksmith’s services as engineering teams adopt AI solutions like Claude Code and Codex, leading to a dramatic rise in the volume of code written and pull requests generated.
Aditya 'JP' Jayaprakash, Blacksmith’s co-founder and CEO, stated, 'Writing code has gotten dramatically easier, but the challenge of validating that code remains. We are witnessing a clear trend where teams using coding agents generate multiple pull requests, creating a bottleneck in the CI process.' The validation layer is becoming crucial as agents increasingly generate code, necessitating robust infrastructure to ensure that each piece of code is built, tested, and reviewed before it is deployed.
Blacksmith initially established itself with a specialized infrastructure designed to manage CI workloads significantly faster than conventional cloud instances. The transition to this platform can be achieved with just a single line of change in a workflow file, ensuring seamless integration for developers. The company’s primary mission is to enable developers to validate and merge code more quickly, fostering confidence in the changes they implement.
Recently, Blacksmith introduced its own cloud coding agent named codesmith. This innovative tool allows developers to delegate tasks effectively; it not only builds features and rectifies bugs but also operates within the validation loop to diagnose CI issues and implement automatic fixes, keeping pull requests active and error-free. Additionally, codesmith serves as the foundation for a forthcoming quality assurance feature, codesmith QA, which autonomously tests changes prior to their integration.
As for the allocation of the newly acquired funds, a substantial portion will enhance Blacksmith’s computational capabilities. The company currently maintains hundreds of thousands of cores and plans to expand this infrastructure dramatically in the coming months to keep pace with the rising demand for its services.
Blacksmith is actively seeking engineering talent to join its teams in New York and San Francisco. The hiring initiative reflects the company’s commitment to scaling its capabilities amid a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
Founded by Aditya Jayaprakash, Aayush Shah, and Aditya Maru, Blacksmith specializes in infrastructures dedicated to code validation. It operates a CI cloud optimized for GitHub Actions workloads and supports various influential companies looking to streamline their development processes.
As Blacksmith continues to grow and innovate, it positions itself as a key player in redefining how validation processes are managed within software development, urging developers to embrace the power of AI in their workflows.
