The Rising Threat of DDoS Attacks: Insights from Arelion's 2026 Report



Arelion recently released its much-anticipated DDoS threat landscape report for 2026, shedding light on troubling trends in distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. The findings indicate that the Aisuru botnet has emerged as the most formidable threat in the cyber landscape, responsible for nearly one-third of global DDoS attack traffic. This resurgence in DDoS activities signals a paradigm shift in how cybercriminals are orchestrating their attacks, making it imperative for businesses to ramp up their defense strategies.

The data compiled in Arelion's report comes from the company's robust Internet backbone, AS1299, which leads the industry in handling network traffic. The report indicates a startling increase in DDoS attack voluming, with recorded peaks reaching an astonishing 6.1 terabits per second (Tbps). This exponential growth in attack size hints at a new era of DDoS threats, one that has become significantly more complex and impactful.

The Role of AI in DDoS Attacks



A significant highlight of the report is the assertion that advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have dramatically lowered the threshold for executing complex DDoS attacks. Automated bots are now capable of overwhelming even the most critical digital infrastructures in just a matter of seconds. The Aisuru botnet, which gained notoriety in 2025, utilizes an extensive network of over 500,000 compromised IoT devices and Android-based systems to unleash its devastating attacks. Its record-breaking assault, which peaked at 31.4 Tbps in December 2025, exemplifies the sheer scale of modern cyber threats.

Aisuru predominantly targets major gaming and cloud computing service providers, often launching attacks that surpass 1 Tbps. In a defensive escalation, its variant known as KimWolf has managed to infiltrate millions of Android devices, including popular streaming devices. Unlike past DDoS tactics that employed smaller, less detectable packet sizes, Aisuru's strategy combines overwhelming volume with multi-vector complexity, complicating defensive maneuvers.

Analyzing Attack Patterns



Arelion's findings reveal that the contemporary DDoS landscape is characterized by hypervolumetric attacks, largely enabled by automation and AI. Trends indicate that attack volumes have skyrocketed, with gigabits per second (Gbps) metrics seeing a 22 percent increase to nearly 6,120 Gbps. Additionally, the average packets per second (Mpps) surged by 60 percent to 999 Mpps. Even more concerning, peak traffic has risen by an alarming 290 percent, emphasizing the move toward hyperscale disruption in cyber environments.
