Understanding Cryptocurrency Wallet Usage: Insights from a Recent Survey

In recent times, the use of cryptocurrency wallets has gained immense popularity, especially in Japan. CC Moola conducted an insightful survey involving 185 participants with varying levels of cryptocurrency experience from September 10 to September 23, 2025. The primary objective was to gauge user preferences for cryptocurrency storage methods and their sentiments towards wallet functionality.

Survey Highlights

The survey revealed several key findings that shed light on how users store their cryptocurrencies. Remarkably, 27.1% of respondents reported keeping their assets directly on exchanges, indicating a preference for the convenience, even at the potential risk of losing control over their digital assets.

Types of Wallets Utilized

Among the users who utilized wallets, 39.5% favored hot wallets, which operate online. Out of the hot wallets, 55.5% preferred mobile wallets, citing ease of use and convenience as significant factors. Conversely, cold wallets, utilized by 13.5% of respondents, were selected primarily for their security advantages, with 64.0% prioritizing safety in their storage decisions.

Wallet Usage Insights

When experiencing their wallets, users noted that sending currencies was smooth for 30.3% of them, reflecting an effective operational interface in most wallet services used. However, challenges surfaced, including high transaction fees (20.5%) and a lack of Japanese language support or information (17.8%). This highlights the ongoing balancing act between user-friendliness and robust security.

Methodology of the Survey

CC Moola employed internet research methods utilizing Freezy as a tool, focusing on individuals with cryptocurrency experience. The demographic breakdown involved 135 males and 50 females, emphasizing a diverse representation within the participant pool.

Wallet Preference Breakdown

The survey delved deeper into user preferences:
  • - Most users (39.5%) opted for online management via hot wallets, while 15.1% used a combination of both hot and cold wallets. Additionally, 31.9% admitted uncertainty about their wallet choice, indicating the need for more education in this field.

Hot Wallet Types

Among hot wallet users, mobile wallets led the pack, chosen by 55.5% for their accessibility. Notably, web wallets also showed significant usage, with 52.5% opting for browser-based solutions, while only 25.7% employed desktop wallets.

Reasons for Wallet Choices

Awareness of why users choose particular wallets is crucial: hot wallets are favored for their ease of use (60.3%) and immediate transaction capabilities (38.4%), while cold wallets appeal for their security (64.0%) and suitability for long-term holding (52.0%).

Major Concerns Among Users

While the survey pointed out positives, it also highlighted concerns. A significant number of users felt high transaction fees (20.5%) were burdensome. Furthermore, the lack of accessible information in Japanese was a frustrating gap for 17.8% of respondents, suggesting a significant barrier for broader user adoption.

Conclusion

The findings from CC Moola's survey underline the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency wallet use and the diverse perspectives among users. While the demand for secure storage solutions remains paramount, user experience and accessibility will play critical roles in shaping future wallet technologies. Understanding this balance will be essential for developers and service providers as they seek to enhance user satisfaction and drive wider adoption in Japan's cryptocurrency market.
