New Study Reveals Cups and Discs Help Alleviate Period Cramping for Women

In a groundbreaking study by People Science in collaboration with NYU, findings suggest that women are six times more likely to report no menstrual cramping after switching from traditional tampons to reusable menstrual cups and discs. This significant consumer research was released on Menstrual Hygiene Day and marks a turning point in period care products. Conducted among a diverse pool of participants, this study seeks to empower women with more sustainable and effective options for managing their menstrual health.

The Study Breakdown

The study monitored 188 women over three complete menstrual cycles. Initially, participants recorded their experiences using tampons, and then they transitioned to Saalt's reusable products, documenting their symptoms daily via the Chloe app provided by People Science. The results were astonishing, with 24% of participants stating they experienced no cramping while using the cups and discs, compared to just 4% when they were using tampons.

Symptoms Improvement

The research did not only focus on cramping; it also evaluated additional symptoms such as fatigue, bloating, and headaches, all of which saw statistically significant improvements. In fact, 78% of the participants reported an overall enhancement in symptom relief, showcasing a compelling case against the traditionally accepted narrative that menstrual discomfort is inevitable.

Addressing Skepticism

A relevant factor contributing to this shift in consumer preference is the growing skepticism surrounding the content of mainstream menstrual products. Increasing reports of toxic elements, including heavy metals found in various tampon brands, have led many women to search for safer alternatives. This study arrives at an opportune moment, providing substantial evidence that supports the effectiveness and safety of reusable menstrual products.

User Satisfaction

Interestingly, user satisfaction ratings were remarkably high, with 95% of participants stating they would recommend Saalt's products to others. Furthermore, 76% expressed intentions to continue using the reusable menstrual products indefinitely. This feedback signifies a paradigm shift towards more sustainable menstrual care options in the market.

The Innovative Approach

The unique design of this study—a decentralized, open-label format—allowed for a realistic evaluation of the products' performance in real-life scenarios. Azure Grant, PhD, from People Science, highlighted the importance of such research: "This kind of research is possible due to decentralized tools and the women eager for proof of their products' efficacy. By capturing high-fidelity, real-world evidence, we can substantiate the claims of brands like Saalt."
