LEIFRAS Co., Ltd. Connects Sports, Skills, and Academic Success Through Innovative EdTech

Exploring the Synergy Between Sports Engagement and Academic Performance

In a groundbreaking study conducted by LEIFRAS Co., Ltd., a renowned Japanese company specializing in youth sports and community engagement, the link between sports participation, non-cognitive skill development, and academic success has been illuminated. Utilizing their proprietary educational technology platform, Milabo, the research has paved the way for a new approach in education that emphasizes the importance of non-cognitive skills alongside academic achievement.

The Study Overview

Conducted at Hachioji Municipal Takane Elementary School, this one-year empirical study monitored 147 elementary students across grades 4 to 6. With a focus on understanding the correlation between students’ involvement in sports and their overall performance in school, assessments were utilized through the Milabo platform three times during the academic year.

Key Findings

The results of the study showed a positive and notable association between students’ enthusiasm for sports and enhancements in their non-cognitive skills, which include essential life skills such as leadership, cooperativeness, and problem-solving abilities.

1. Academic Correlation

The study revealed a significant correlation (r = 0.21) between the strengthening of non-cognitive skills and improvements in academic grades. This finding supports the theory that fostering these essential skills can lead to better educational outcomes.

2. Influence of Sports Engagement

Students who expressed higher levels of affinity towards sports, such as those who exercised regularly, showcased superior scores in non-cognitive skills evaluations. The correlations illustrated a stronger tendency toward engaging in daily physical activities (r = 0.43) and the eagerness to participate in extracurricular exercise (r = 0.40).

3. Non-Cognitive Skill Metrics Growth

The study tracked improvements across five distinct non-cognitive skill metrics, which included courtesy and etiquette, leadership, cooperativeness, self-management, and problem-solving. Enhanced metacognitive awareness, bolstered by visual growth charts in Milabo, helped students track their development, resulting in upward trends across all five indicators from the first to the third trimester.

4. Customized Teaching and Feedback

Teachers effectively used the instant feedback provided by Milabo as a diagnostic tool to tailor their instructional methods. Consequently, students began adopting more proactive attitudes and reflective practices in their learning processes.

Implications and Future Directions

According to the project lead at LEIFRAS, the study underscores the importance of sports in nurturing vital life skills for children, which subsequently contributes to their academic accomplishments. Innovations such as Milabo are seen as crucial in supporting educators, allowing them to visualize and harness the hidden potentials of their students.

Mr. Yota Gushima, the research director at Takane Elementary School, emphasized the significant impact that Milabo has had in student goal-setting, contributing to a qualitative change in the classroom environment. This includes a noticeable increase in students’ verbal expressions of positive attitudes and self-perceptions, indicative of an augmented capacity for metacognition.

Moving ahead, LEIFRAS aims to delve deeper into the mechanisms by which sports engagement cultivates proactivity and non-cognitive growth among students. The recognition received from the Panasonic Education Foundation's 52nd Practical Research Grant for fiscal 2026 is expected to bolster continued collaborative research initiatives.

In conclusion, LEIFRAS is committed to partnering with educational institutions and government bodies across Japan to expand the reach of Milabo, fostering a holistic educational ecosystem that aligns children's learning capacities with their athletic pursuits. This proactive approach to integrating sports into education is set to revolutionize how we view academic performance and the development of essential life skills among youth.
