FPT and Yamato's Strategic Collaboration for Driver Training
On November 12, 2025, FPT Japan Holdings and Yamato Holdings announced a basic agreement to collaboratively recruit and train Vietnamese truck drivers through the Employment of Foreign Workers Program in Japan. This partnership aims to strengthen the logistics sector in Japan by addressing the pressing need for truck drivers amidst an aging workforce. The average age of truck drivers in Japan stands at 50.9 years, which is about 6.8 years higher than other industries. Hence, cultivating new skilled drivers is critical for the future mobility of logistics.
FPT Corporation, based in Vietnam, and led by founder and Chairman Truong Gia Binh, in cooperation with Yamato Transport, have set out a structured program to foster a sustainable logistics model. Yamato's President, Yu Nagao, emphasized the importance of providing an environment where young Vietnamese can work comfortably in Japan. Over the next few years, they plan to establish a robust platform that supports not only recruitment but also the steady training and integration of these foreign drivers into the Japanese logistics framework.
Recruitment and Training Framework
Under the basic agreement, a special class will be introduced at educational institutions operated by FPT Group in Vietnam. The program aims to support the recruitment and training of large truck drivers who will facilitate inter-base transportation for Yamato Transport. Following their hiring, the selected candidates will undergo comprehensive training to ensure they can adapt to living and working culture in Japan.
Three Phased Training Approach
1.
Recruitment in Vietnam: Starting December 2025, potential candidates will be invited to enroll in the newly launched special class at FPT educational institutions.
2.
In-Vietnam Training for 6 Months: Special classes will kick off in 2026, where candidates will be taught the Japanese language at N4 level, basic Japanese cultural norms, and safety measures guided by Yamato's curriculum. Additionally, they will prepare to take the Skill Evaluation Test for specified skilled workers in Japan.
3.
Training in Japan for 1 Year: As international students, successful candidates will join FPT Japan’s language school. They will receive advanced Japanese training at N3 level and further cultural education while preparing for license conversion exams needed to obtain a Large Vehicle Operator's License.
Integration and Employment
Once qualified, these trainees will join Yamato Transport as specified skilled foreigners for a period of five years, initiating their careers in the logistics sector while ensuring they have the support necessary for a successful transition into Japanese workplaces.
Collaborative Vision
Truong Gia Binh expressed his enthusiasm for starting this new challenge in talent development. He highlights that logistics is the lifeblood of any economy, and for sustainable growth, it is crucial to merge state-of-the-art technology with expertly trained personnel. Both FPT and Yamato foresee generating considerable economic value through the development of rigorous training programs alongside Japanese language education and support in career development, ultimately leading to a more inclusive society where foreigners can thrive in Japan.
Yu Nagao also reiterated his belief in the capabilities and determination of the young Vietnamese workforce, advocating for a collaborative effort that builds an environment conducive for them to flourish as truck drivers in Japan. By establishing a framework that includes comprehensive Japanese education and helps them obtain necessary driving licenses, the partnership aims to create an appealing workplace where these drivers can flourish.
In conclusion, the collaboration between FPT and Yamato not only enhances the logistical capabilities of Japan's transportation sector but also provides meaningful opportunities for Vietnamese youth—a step towards a sustainable future.
