Indiana American Water Customers Receive PFAS Settlement Credits
Indiana American Water has announced the distribution of its fourth round of bill credits to customers this October. This initiative comes in light of settlements reached with manufacturers of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), leading the company to return significant funds to its customers across the state. The total amount credited to customers now surpasses $25.5 million, with eligible water customers receiving almost $75 each since November 2025.
The majorities of residential customers will find that this amount exceeds their average monthly water bill, which is typically around $55 for a consumption of approximately 4,000 gallons. The four rounds of credits are as follows:
- - First Credit (November 2025): $13.20
- - Second Credit (January 2026): $39.43
- - Third Credit (July-August 2026): $10.64
- - Fourth Credit (October 2026): $11.65
The total reaches $74.92, reflecting a strategic approach by the Indiana American Water. They have established a customer bill credit mechanism approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) to facilitate the timely distribution of these funds. This mechanism not only ensures efficiency in the return of funds but also promotes transparency and fairness among customer accounts.
Barry Suits, president of Indiana American Water expressed, "We remain committed to returning these settlement proceeds directly to our customers while continuing to invest in the long-term protection of safe, clean, reliable, and affordable drinking water across Indiana." The settlement proceeds are a direct result of legal actions taken by numerous water utilities nationwide against PFAS manufacturers, as they seek reparation for the contamination of water supplies.
These credits are distributed independently of any detection of PFAS in a customer’s water source. Indiana American Water is steadfast in its mission to meet all state and federal drinking water standards while actively addressing the evolving regulations concerning PFAS.
As pioneers in PFAS treatment and water quality initiatives in Indiana, Indiana American Water continues to make substantial investments in water treatment technology. Notably, in January 2026, the utility made headlines by launching Indiana's first drinking water treatment system designed specifically to eliminate PFAS at its Charlestown Water Treatment Plant. Ongoing PFAS treatment projects are also currently being implemented in Terre Haute, with plans for further development across the state to align with future regulatory requirements.
PFAS, a group of man-made chemicals, have been widely used in various consumer products and industrial applications for many years. Due to their environmental persistence and potential health risks, they have come under scrutiny, prompting greater regulatory oversight and public awareness. Indiana American Water’s participation in the multi-district litigation against PFAS manufacturers underscores their commitment to rectifying the impact of these chemicals on public health and safety.
