Showa Front Unveils Award-Winning Works from 56th Storefront Competition

Showa Front Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Sanwa Holdings Corporation based in Tokyo, has announced the exceptional winners of the 56th Storefront Competition. This year’s competition attracted a record-breaking 2,368 entries, showcasing a myriad of innovative and aesthetically pleasing architectural designs submitted by creative minds across the industry. The highlight of the event was the announcement of the Grand Prix winner, "Top Rank Main Store."

Grand Prix Winner: Top Rank Main Store

The Grand Prix was awarded to "Top Rank Main Store," which stood out among the substantial entries. Situated at a corner facing the Narita Street that connects Funabashi to Narita, the design of the showroom features two levels of windows that create a diagonal repetition across the facade, making it both striking and functional. This showroom for high-end imported cars was designed to ensure that vehicles are easily visible from the street while creating a spacious interior with a loft-inspired atmosphere via an open staircase.

The use of full, two-level glass windows not only showcases the vehicles' distinctiveness but does so without unnecessary decoration, allowing the cars to take center stage within the showroom. Despite the slim frames of the windows, they are equipped with crucial fire safety features and smoke exhaust functionalities, merging safety with aesthetic appeal seamlessly.

Committee Chair's Remarks

Koji Yagi, the chair of the jury, commented on the exceptional quality of submissions. He noted that architectural beauty often shines through at dusk, enhancing the appeal of facades, which was evident in many of this year's entries. The balance of materials such as glass, wall panels, and riser materials were instrumental in creating captivating designs.

Gold Prize in Retail Architecture: DS Store Okayama

In the first section focused on retail architecture, the Gold Prize was awarded to “DS Store Okayama.” The building’s design utilizes a curtain wall for its structure, creating a brilliant contrast between the first floor and the upper levels, giving the optical illusion of two separate buildings from a frontal view. Adjustments in the colors and divisions of the sashes exhibit an outstanding composition, showcasing the frame system's sophistication.

General Architecture Gold Prize: THE DINING by KAMAGAYA BIRTH CLINIC

In the general architecture category, “THE DINING by KAMAGAYA BIRTH CLINIC” won the Gold Prize. This extension of the main RC structure is surrounded by transparent glass, allowing the wooden frame’s natural texture to be appreciated fully. The second floor's flooring and roof framework further enhance the floating effect created by the glass, leaving a light impression thanks to the discreet framing of the structure.

Renovation Gold Prize: Marunaka Construction Gifu Branch

The Renovation section recognized “Marunaka Construction's Gifu Branch” with a Gold Prize. The company’s own building underwent a significant facade renovation. Previously, the layout of the windows and entrances appeared somewhat functional; however, cloaking the existing structure with a modern curtain wall redefined its image beautifully. This enhancement likely improves the building's insulation performance, aligning it with the high standards expected from a firm engaged in Zero Energy House (ZEH) and Zero Energy Building (ZEB) projects.

Conclusion

The 56th Storefront Competition continued to spotlight innovation and creativity in architectural design, providing a platform for showcasing cutting-edge solutions that blend aesthetics with functionality. This year’s winners have set a high standard in the industry, reflecting ongoing trends and pioneering techniques in storefront and architectural design.
