This unique event will feature more than 20 residents of Kyoshima, sharing their invaluable experiences and memories, allowing visitors to trace the rich history of this small town that survived the ravages of war.

An Insight into Denkiyu

Established in 1922, Denkiyu has served as a cornerstone of local culture for over a century. More than just a public bathing facility, it embodies the spirit and community of the area, standing witness to the ever-evolving dynamics of life in this historic district. Through this exhibition, the intimate and warm connections that have blossomed within the neighborhood will be highlighted and celebrated.

Purpose of the Exhibition

The exhibition aims to preserve the memory of Kyoshima's living culture which is gradually fading away due to rapid redevelopment in recent years. The close-knit relationships and the warm ambiance that define this community are at risk of being lost, with many precious moments failing to be documented. The 'Kyoshima Life History' event seeks to honor and record the life stories of its long-time residents, thus preserving the essence of Kyoshima for future generations.

This initiative is part of the 'Sumida River: All Things in Nature Imagined in Ink' project, slated for 2025.

Exhibition Highlights

The Denkiyu's bathing area will serve as the exhibition venue where various narratives derived from interviews with over 20 long-term residents will be presented. Their rich histories and cherished memories will be captured in written text and photographs. Visitors are invited to soak in hot water while immersing themselves in the vivid tales of community life that spanned a century. The exhibition promises a nostalgic journey through time, revealed through both old photographs and personal records, showcasing a living culture that has endured for 100 years.
