Global Standards for Net5.5G Readiness Certification Unveiled by WBBA at MWC Barcelona 2026
During the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 held in Barcelona, the World Broadband Association (WBBA) in partnership with global industry leaders introduced a technical report focused on the evaluation and certification standards necessary for preparing for Net5.5G. This significant report, unveiled at the Broadband Development Congress (BDC), serves as a standardized framework for the evolution of smart networks for operators and enterprises worldwide.
The report outlines the IP Network Development Index, marking the first global assessment and classification framework that encompasses campus networks, carrier-grade IP networks, and data center environments. By providing operators and enterprises with a robust reference standard, the WBBA is paving the way for commercial deployment and smart evolution at a global scale. This initiative aligns with the WBBA’s ongoing pioneering program for Net5.5G, now boasting a global matrix that includes 32 visionary pioneers, 6 regional pioneers, and 44 corporate pioneers.
In conjunction with these developments, Huawei announced its upgraded Net5.5G IP carrier network offerings, aligning with the new standards set by the WBBA. Steven Zhao, Vice President of Huawei's Data Communication Product Line, emphasized the importance of integrating networks with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance smart capabilities. He stated, “To embrace the era of total intelligence, the WBBA is fostering deep integration of Net5.5G networks and AI. Huawei's upgraded IP carrier networks focus on three key dimensions: security resilience, multidimensional insights, and autonomous networks. These enhancements will enable operators to build a smart Net5.5G IP network foundation, preserving service experience, accelerating monetization, and enhancing efficiency in connectivity.
