On September 29, also known as Pet Hunger Awareness Day, the organization announced it will direct an impressive $7 million worth of pet food to food banks across the country. This initiative, in partnership with Feeding America, aims to not only provide human food but also to ensure that pets do not go hungry.

PetSmart Charities estimates that approximately 30 million pets are living in households experiencing food insecurity. Yet, despite the staggering statistics, a recent survey reveals that only 31% of the public is aware that pet hunger is an issue. The gap between public awareness and reality highlights the importance of this initiative.

The Reality of Pet Hunger

Many pet owners face tough choices when it comes to feeding their families and pets. According to their research, 56% of pet parents have had to cut back on other expenses just to provide for their pets. Alarmingly, 13% of pet owners who have struggled financially with pet food have considered rehoming or surrendering their animals. Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities, emphasizes the emotional toll such decisions can take: "When pet parents face hunger, those times of uncertainty can lead to heartbreaking decisions."

Working in alignment with Feeding America, PetSmart Charities is providing necessary resources to community food banks during Hunger Action Month. This partnership illustrates a commitment to keeping families together by ensuring access to pet food, thereby alleviating some of the burden on low-income households. The approach has already proven successful; by the end of the year, this program is expected to have delivered 480 million pet meals since its inception.

Integrating Pet Needs into Human Services

Instead of creating brand new infrastructures, PetSmart Charities collaborates with existing food support systems to help those in dire need. Since 2017, the organization has been routing pet food through food banks that families are already using. This strategy allows families to access groceries and pet care necessities in a single visit, making the process more convenient and efficient.

Additionally, PetSmart Charities partners with Meals on Wheels America to aid elderly citizens in caring for their pets. Many seniors find immense comfort in their furry companions, and through the support of this program, over 20 million pet meals have been delivered so far. The survey conducted by Meals on Wheels America shows that nearly every client feels less lonely and emotionally supported thanks to their pets.
