Kyorin University Launches Study on Atrial Fibrillation with Apple Watch Technology

New Atrial Fibrillation Study Utilizing Apple Watch at Kyorin University



In a groundbreaking initiative, Kyorin University in Mitaka City, Tokyo, has embarked on a novel research project aiming to enhance treatment approaches for atrial fibrillation (AF). This study is led by Professor Kyoko Soejima and Assistant Professor Takuto Mori, both from the university's Department of Cardiology. The focus of the research is to observe patients undergoing catheter ablation—a treatment for AF—by leveraging the innovative capabilities of the Apple Watch.

Understanding Atrial Fibrillation


Atrial fibrillation is known as the most common arrhythmia and can lead to severe complications, such as strokes, heart failure, and dementia if left untreated. Therefore, early detection and treatment are critical. Recent studies have shown that wearable devices, such as the Apple Watch, effectively detect AF early, potentially reducing the risk of associated heart failure. Indeed, patients with heart failure often experience a high frequency of AF, thereby heightening the importance of timely intervention.

The treatment method of choice, catheter ablation, is designed to isolate the pulmonary veins that serve as triggers for AF. This method has demonstrated higher efficacy compared to traditional drug therapies, and Kyorin University has been actively treating many patients with it.

A Comprehensive Approach to AF Treatment


In recent years, the treatment landscape for AF has expanded beyond just rhythm control (like ablation and antiarrhythmic medications) and rate control to also include anticoagulation therapy to prevent thrombosis. Lifestyle adjustments, such as moderating alcohol and tobacco use and improving daily exercise and sleep patterns, have become increasingly significant. However, accurately assessing patients’ daily lives to provide personalized improvement recommendations has proven challenging.

Innovative Use of Apple Watch


Participants in this research study will utilize the latest Apple Watch Series 10. The healthcare features of this device employ powerful sensors and applications to track vital parameters, including physical activity, walking speed, calorie expenditure, and sleep quality. Furthermore, additional functions of the Apple Watch can detect irregular heart rhythms, elevated or low heart rates, decreased heart function, and blood oxygen levels.

Typically, tests like electrocardiograms and cardiopulmonary exercise tests occur in clinical settings. However, if the measurements from wearable devices can correlate with results from traditional tests, it could transform how future heart failure patients are managed.

Support from Apple Inc.


In support of the research, Apple Inc. has provided access to Apple Watch devices and templates for developing an iOS research application. Importantly, Apple does not participate in the study's design or implementation and is not involved in the collection, analysis, or interpretation of research data.

Through this initiative, Kyorin University seeks to harness technology in improving patient outcomes for those suffering from atrial fibrillation while emphasizing the importance of early detection and proactive management. The combination of innovative wearable technology with advanced medical practices could revolutionize the treatment of heart ailments in the years to come.
