Experience Farming in Gunma: Planting Red Onions and Sweet Potatoes

Explore Agriculture in Gunma

On Saturday, May 30th, a unique agriculture experience will take place at "Minna no Hatake" in Isesaki City, organized by the Gunma Agricultural Council, "Meguruma." Families involved with the Pal System Gunma will have the chance to connect with nature and engage in farming activities such as planting, weeding, and harvesting. This first event marks the beginning of a series hosted at this communal farm where participants will cultivate red onions and sweet potatoes.

Event Overview

The event is set to start at 10 AM and will accommodate around 70 families in the region. This initiative aims to educate participants about the entire growing process, from planting to harvest, fostering a deeper understanding of the agricultural practices involved. The field will be managed by the Tone River Producer Group, ensuring that participants have the guidance and knowledge they need to succeed.

Families will plant seedlings of red onions and sweet potatoes, aiming for a harvest in November. June will see participants return to help with weeding and digging up potatoes. The culmination of this farming experience will be the harvest in November, where participants can enjoy grilled red onions and baked sweet potatoes.

Community Engagement

The experience is designed to enhance interaction between producers and families, spreading awareness and appreciation for local agriculture. Participants will not only witness the joy of growing vegetables but also the challenges faced by farmers. This nurturing environment fosters an understanding of where food comes from and the cooperative efforts of everyone involved in the food supply chain.

Continued Engagement

The communal farm, "Minna no Hatake," will serve as a continual site for these educational activities. As the growing season progresses, families will return to check on their plants, feeling a connection to the food they consume.

Upcoming Activities

To maintain engagement, more activities are planned after the initial planting experience:
  • - June 13 and 20: Weeding and potato digging sessions.
  • - July 11: The second session of the "Mame Mame Course" focused on harvesting edamame and corn.
  • - November 7: The second session of the "Negi Negi Course" focusing on the harvest and tasting experiences of red onions and sweet potatoes.

Sustainable Practices

The Gunma Agricultural Council, alongside the Pal System, has committed to providing opportunities that promote the emotional growth of children through hands-on farming experiences. Besides the "Negi Negi Course," they will concurrently run the "Mame Mame Course" that focuses on cultivating quality, nutritious crops like edamame.

The council is determined to connect the community’s agricultural practices with the rich culinary culture of Gunma, to ensure it gets passed down to the next generation.

Strengthening Local Agriculture

Established by Pal System Gunma in collaboration with three local agricultural groups, the Gunma Agricultural Council "Meguruma" aims to promote sustainable farming and healthy living within the region. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2026, the council welcomes three new member organizations, further reinforcing its mission.

Through its initiatives, like the "Meguruma 2035 Vision," the council strives to promote local production and consumption, ensuring mutual understanding between consumers and producers.

As Pal System Gunma continues to bridge the gap between producers and consumers, they solidify their commitment to encouraging sustainable farming practices and enhancing the local food landscape.
