Huawei and Industry Partners Explore AI Potential in Telecommunications



In a significant gathering at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 held in Shanghai from June 18-20, Huawei brought together a diverse group of participants, including operators, AI ecosystem partners, scholars, and industry representatives at the Mobile AI Summit. The summit aimed to delve into the current trends and future prospects of artificial intelligence (AI) within the context of telecommunications. From the discussions, two primary conclusions emerged regarding the advancement of AI in 5G-A networks: the enhancement of uplink connection speeds and the critical role of synergy between networks and services for monetization.

The event notably featured the launch of the GSMA Foundry Mobile Network for Thriving AI, which highlighted how telecom operators are beginning to monetize AI-based services while transitioning towards networks built on these advanced technologies.

Future Directions for Telecommunications



Wen Ku, Chairman of the China Communications Standards Association (CCSA), emphasized during his keynote the necessity of integrating 5G-A with AI as a pivotal direction for the telecommunications sector. He stressed the importance of establishing standards, integrating intelligent networks, and collaborating on development initiatives within ecosystems to create innovative telecommunications solutions.

Notable industry pioneers from companies such as Rokid, MiniMax, and Unitree Robotics discussed the potential for AI service providers to take a leading role in fostering diverse competition and quickly seizing new market opportunities. Operators are continuously expanding their offerings beyond traditional touchscreen interactions to encompass various modes including voice, visual, and spatial interfaces.

Furthermore, advancements in AI are paving the way for improved audiovisual data transmission rates and model precision levels. The integration of 5G-A networks will play a crucial role in reducing latency, which is essential for delivering high-quality services like real-time interactions and high-definition video calls requiring uplink speeds of at least 20 Mbps. Experts such as Zhi-Quan Luo from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and representatives from Ookla shared best practices regarding network optimization and strategic planning to fully leverage AI technology.

The Transformation of Telecommunications



The integration of AI is fundamentally transforming both cellular networks and the broader telecommunications industry. Operators are finding it easier to digitally transform their networks and operational maintenance processes, while businesses are able to offer diverse services across various sectors. This shift is facilitating monetization not just through web traffic but also through the services provided on these platforms.

A consensus at the summit highlighted that key factors reflecting a network's potential for telecommunications AI include uplink bandwidth, latency, and stability.

GigaBand: A New Model for Service Monetization



As a leader in 5G-A technology, Huawei introduced its GigaBand solutions, which combine spectrum and radio resources with an optimization solver (Optsolver). This innovation enables a seamless evolution of 5G-A networks tailored for new AI services. It allows operators to build flexible networks that cater to a wide array of services, including live streaming, AI assistants, and cloud gaming. For instance, the implementation of GigaBand in Hong Kong demonstrated the ability to share bandwidth between 4G and 5G for varied service requirements, resulting in a 2.28-fold increase in 5G throughput while maintaining 4G service quality.

This solution is proving invaluable for operators who wish to create efficient, intelligent, and low-emission 5G SA networks. With ongoing enhancements in 5G-A, accelerated by GigaBand and other cutting-edge technologies, the fusion of telecommunications and AI is emerging as a new growth driver for industry revenue.
