Dallas Opera Launches “Carmen” for 2025/2026 Season
The Dallas Opera (TDO) is set to begin its 2025/2026 season with the highly anticipated U.S. premiere of a newly reconstructed production of
Carmen, marking the 150th anniversary of Georges Bizet's iconic opera. This extraordinary performance will be held on
October 17, 2025, at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas, TX.
A Celebration of History
This production promises to be a faithful recreation of the original staging from the 1875 premiere at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. Collaborating with an executive producer from Bru Zane France, a talented team of artists meticulously studied manuals, lithographs, and other historical documents to return Bizet's
Carmen to its original grandeur. The director of this innovative interpretation is Romain Gilbert, who previously helmed TDO's acclaimed adaptation of
Romeo and Juliet in 2024. The aesthetic dimension of the show will be enhanced by the contributions of renowned French fashion designer Christian Lacroix.
Stellar Performances
TDO has lined up an impressive cast for this monumental production. Renowned mezzo-soprano
Marina Viotti, a Grammy winner, will portray the titular role of Carmen, while tenor
Saimir Pirgu will take on Don José. Both singers are making their debuts with TDO after receiving accolades for their performances in Zürich. They will be joined by several other talented debutantes including soprano
Teresa Perrotta, lyric tenor
Matthew Goodheart, and baritone
Kyle Miller, among others.
Returning talents also grace the stage, ensuring a night of musical excellence. The entire production will be conducted by Music Director
Emmanuel Villaume, leading The Dallas Opera Orchestra, the Chorus, and the Greater Dallas Choral Society, all performing in French with English supertitles, preserving the charm of the original score.
Unique Opening Night Celebration
Ian Derrer, the Kern Wildenthal General Director and CEO of TDO, expressed excitement about this historic opener, stating,
“Carmen is the ideal season opener. We’re thrilled to bring this historic production to U.S. audiences for the first time. It’s truly unlike anything you’ve ever seen.” The evening will also feature an Opening Night Celebration, enhancing the rich context of this monumental event.
