WOTA's Initiative to Support Health Care Facilities in Kumamoto After Earthquake
WOTA Inc., based in Chuo, Tokyo, has launched a significant initiative to provide essential bathing and sanitation support to medical and welfare facilities affected by the ongoing water supply issues caused by the recent Kumamoto Earthquake in 2026. Starting August 10, WOTA began a crowdfunding project titled, "Delivering Water to Support Health and Welfare in Kumamoto," aimed at gathering corporate sponsorship and public contributions.
Since the kick-off of this initiative, responses have been overwhelming, with numerous companies and individuals stepping up to offer their support. The corporate sponsorship campaign reached its first deadline, while crowdfunding successfully met its initial target of 10 million yen. Collaborating with organizations such as the Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT), local governments, and health offices, WOTA has assessed the current needs on the ground, prioritizing support effectively. As of August 13, WOTA has deployed 67 units across 26 locations, comprised of 31 WOTA BOXes and 36 WOSH units.
The efforts by WOTA are crucial as numerous medical and welfare facilities continue to face financial burdens that public responses have not completely addressed. The company has responded by providing the much-needed WOTA BOXes (water circulation showers) and WOSH hand-washing stations free of charge to these facilities. With a lack of public funding for the operation, maintenance, and technical support needed during this time, WOTA's crowdfunding and corporate sponsorship campaign aims to bridge this financial gap.
As the initiative started on August 10, the response has been remarkable, with 14 corporate sponsors and a significant number of individual contributions received by the first deadline. By August 14, only five days after launching the crowdfunding effort, approximately 400 individuals had helped reach the target of 10 million yen.
WOTA expresses heartfelt gratitude for all the contributions received thus far. However, with numerous medical and welfare facilities still in need of support, WOTA will continue its crowdfunding and sponsorship efforts to further expand assistance.
The funds raised are directly utilized to address immediate needs, particularly in acquiring and deploying equipment for facilities requiring hygiene solutions. Coordination with DMAT and local authorities ensures that the allocation of resources is effective, prioritizing urgent needs.
The Deployment Process
This structured approach includes:
1. Securing funds through corporate sponsorship and crowdfunding.
2. Collaborating with DMAT and local authorities for up-to-date needs.
3. Prioritizing facilities in urgent need based on the current situation.
4. Deploying and installing WOTA BOX and WOSH units.
5. Transitioning operations to local staff for ongoing management.
As of August 10, WOTA had already deployed ten units across five facilities through self-funding efforts. Following the launch of the corporate sponsorship and crowdfunding, an additional 57 units were introduced to 21 new sites.
In total, as of mid-August, 67 units had been set up in 26 facilities with more planned. This deployment includes strategic setups in welfare facilities where hygiene standards are crucial.
The ongoing water supply issues have hampered the ability to maintain proper hygiene, particularly in healthcare settings unprepared to handle such disasters. Therefore, WOTA aims to continuously monitor and adjust their efforts as necessary to meet the evolving demands on the ground.
In a recent announcement, WOTA released a situation report called the "WOTA Kumamoto Earthquake Response Fact Sheet (Second Report)," detailing the current state of their emergency water supply support efforts.
Moving Forward
Looking ahead, the needs for support remain significant. As of late August, there are 40 facilities identified that require an additional 106 units (53 showers and 53 hand-wash stations). The initial fundraising goal may have been met, but the demand continues to grow. If the restoration of utilities takes longer than anticipated, WOTA is prepared for an even greater need for assistance.
The organization is committed to maintaining their crowdfunding and corporate sponsorship initiatives to ensure ongoing support reaches the healthcare sectors that need it most. By working in tandem with DMAT, local health authorities, and other organizations, WOTA plans to adapt and expand their efforts in response to the changing needs of the affected regions.
