CMSI Partners Launch Final Public Consultation for Mining Standard on October 8, 2025

Final Public Consultation for Mining Standards Set for 2025

The Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative (CMSI) is gearing up for its final public consultation, aimed at gathering last-minute feedback on the Consolidated Mining Standard, Assurance Process, and Claims Policy. Running from October 8 to November 17, 2025, this initiative represents a landmark moment in the evolution of mining standards, combining the strengths of existing frameworks into a unified approach.

CMSI partners, which include esteemed organizations such as The Copper Mark, ICMM, the Mining Association of Canada (MAC), and the World Gold Council (WGC), are excited to invite all stakeholders in the mining industry, as well as rights-holders affected by mining activities, to contribute their insights. This feedback will play a crucial role in finalizing the documents that will set the benchmark for sustainable mining practices globally.

A New Era in Mining Standards

The Consolidated Standard is designed to streamline the myriad of existing mining standards while ensuring that they are both practical and comprehensive. The goal is to reduce the complexity in the standards landscape, facilitating better adoption and implementation by mining companies worldwide. This initiative aims not only to refine practices but also to address the broader implications of mining on society and the environment.

Each organization involved brings its unique expertise and commitment to sustainability. The Copper Mark is recognized for promoting responsible practices within copper and related industries, while the ICMM champions a mining approach that prioritizes principles of sustainability and social responsibility. The MAC represents Canadian mining interests, ensuring adherence to rigorous standards through initiatives like Towards Sustainable Mining. Meanwhile, the WGC focuses on creating a responsible supply chain for gold, advocating for transparency and sustainability in its production.

Engaging Stakeholders Globally

As part of this public consultation, CMSI will host a range of activities designed to engage stakeholders from different sectors and backgrounds. Virtual public webinars will be scheduled across various time zones, ensuring global participation. Direct briefings will be conducted with civil society organizations (CSOs), government representatives, policymakers, and Indigenous Peoples along with their organizations, allowing for diverse voices to be heard throughout the process.

The CMSI's commitment to inclusivity is highlighted by its adherence to ISEAL's Code of Good Practice, which guides the consultation by ensuring transparency and legitimacy. Stakeholders can access the consultation portal on the CMSI website, which includes extensive documentation available in multiple languages, including English, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Brazilian Portuguese.

Building a Sustainable Future

The feedback collected will drive critical improvements in the mining sector, shaping the future of mining standards and practices. After the closure of this consultation, the results will lead into the finalization of the governance model and the appointment of an Independent Chair and Board members. This new board will hold the authority to approve the finalized Consolidated Standard, Assurance Process, and Claims Policy.

CMSI anticipates launching the finalized Consolidated Standard in the first half of 2026, representing a significant milestone in the quest for sustainable mining practices that respect both people and the planet.
