Three-Day Workshop Takes Place in Tokyo
From July 19 to 21, 2025, the Yamawaki Art College, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, will host an intensive workshop titled “Understanding Jewelry: Do-it-Yourself Gemstone Value Assessment - Beginner Level”. This workshop features the renowned Kyoka Suwa, a highly respected figure in the jewelry industry, along with five other esteemed instructors. Participants will get hands-on experience evaluating the quality and value of jewelry pieces, making this an invaluable opportunity for anyone interested in gemstones and jewelry.

Workshop Overview


This workshop is designed for various participants, including jewelry designers, craftsmen, industry professionals, and gemstone enthusiasts. Attendees will take part in practical sessions aimed at teaching them how to identify the quality of gemstones and jewelry through direct interaction with real pieces.

Schedule Highlights:


  • - Day 1 (July 19): Kickoff with introductions and an overview of jewelry assessment methods. Participants will learn sorting techniques for jewelry items.
  • - Day 2 (July 20): Focus on quality assessment, including an analysis of the four major gemstones. Participants will learn to categorize pieces into three quality tiers and evaluate aspects such as gemstone quality, design, and craftsmanship on a five-tier scale.
  • - Day 3 (July 21): Cover fundamental gemstone value assessment techniques, culminating in practical exercises to evaluate the basic value of pieces. This day will wrap up with a reflective discussion led by Kyoka Suwa.

Instructor Profiles


Kyoka Suwa: Chairman of Suwa Trading Company and the first Japanese individual to earn the G.G. credential from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). He is known for overseeing the Miracles of Earth gemstone exhibition at the National Museum of Nature and Science and has authored several books including “The Value of Gemstones: Insights for Informed Consumers.”

Shoji Yamagishi: President of Wako Jewelry and gemstone researcher with extensive qualifications in the field.

Hirohide Suzuki: Head of Atelier Kotobukiya with expertise in various aspects of gems and jewelry.

Yuriko Kouya: Renowned gemstone researcher and board member of the Japan Gem Association, focusing on polishing techniques.

Seisaku Shimomura: Jewelry advisor at a related company of Suwa Trading with a focus on quality standards.

Tomoko Sasaoka: Director of Scales, specializing in gem quality assessments.
