Nikon Releases Enhanced Firmware Version 1.10 for the ZR Cinema Camera

Nikon Unveils Firmware Version 1.10 for ZR Camera

Nikon Corporation has recently announced the release of firmware version 1.10 for the ZR camera, part of its Z CINEMA series designed specifically for cinematic productions. Launched in October 2025, the ZR has already garnered attention in the filmmaking community, and this update is set to enhance its functionality dramatically.

Key Features of Firmware Version 1.10

1. Extended Recording Time

One of the most significant improvements in this firmware update is the substantial extension of the continuous recording time for video. Filmmakers can now record for up to 360 minutes (6 hours), a remarkable increase from the previous maximum of 125 minutes. This change is particularly beneficial for long-duration interviews, concerts, documentaries, and various other events, allowing filmmakers to focus on their storytelling without worrying about running out of recording time.

It is important to note that the extended recording time is applicable under specific conditions, including using certain formats like ProRes 422 HQ 10-bit (MOV) and H.265 10-bit (MOV), with limitations on frame rates. Utilizing external power sources, like mobile batteries, is recommended to ensure optimal performance.

2. Enhanced Multi-Camera Synchronization

The update improves the versatility of working with multiple cameras. In addition to the existing Bluetooth timecode synchronization, users can now connect via a more reliable wired method, enabling easier synchronization between external audio recording devices and multiple cameras. This enhancement eliminates the need for Bluetooth pairing, simplifying the setup process. Furthermore, once the cameras are synchronized, they can continue the timecode even if disconnected, thanks to the Jam sync feature.

Additionally, the firmware introduces a file naming convention similar to RED cameras, which helps prevent file name duplication, making it easier to manage multiple video files during a shoot. The dedicated file name settings and live view screen displays also contribute to more efficient data management for extensive multi-camera setups.

3. Improved Exposure Control and Creative Flexibility

For filmmakers utilizing the R3D NE format for Log3G10 recording, the firmware update includes the introduction of warning lines on the brightness information display (histogram and waveform monitor). These lines act as indicators for the maximum brightness level, thus greatly facilitating exposure control.

Moreover, the number of selectable LUTs that can be imported from memory cards has increased significantly from 10 to 50, providing creative filmmakers with a broader range of options to choose from in the field, streamlining the workflow further.

4. User-Friendly Features

The firmware update also prioritizes user convenience. An energy-saving display option for the power lamp has been added to the setup menu, allowing users to check the camera's power state easily, even with the monitor closed. This feature is particularly useful when transporting the camera, as it helps prevent unwanted battery drainage.

Additionally, even in AUTO shooting mode, switching to the R3D NE 12-bit (R3D) video recording format is now possible. This feature enhances the user experience, enabling seamless cinematic video capture.

Conclusion

Nikon remains committed to continuously evolving its products through firmware updates, ensuring they meet the needs of their users while contributing positively to the development of cinematic culture. The ZR camera, with the new firmware version 1.10, is an exciting tool for filmmakers, combining extended capabilities with user-friendly enhancements, making it a valuable addition to any cinematographer's arsenal.
