SuperH™ 5K Run, Walk & Wheel: A Celebration of Community and Resilience
The SuperH™ 5K Run, Walk & Wheel event, now in its 23rd year, is set to take place on Sunday, September 20, at OneLife Fitness in Tysons, Virginia. This beloved annual fundraiser aims to support adaptive sports and fitness initiatives at the MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH). The event was established by Harry Freedman and his wife, Renie, as a way to contribute back to the hospital after Harry's own recovery from a significant workplace accident.
A Platform for Adaptive Athletes
SuperH™ embodies the spirit of challenge and resilience among adaptive sports athletes. The event serves as a principal fundraising channel for programs at MedStar NRH that help participants regain confidence, enhance their well-being, and achieve independence following life-altering injuries or illnesses. According to Harsh Thakkar, the Director of Community Engagement and Quality of Life Services at MedStar Health, the organization strives to create an inclusive environment where individuals are encouraged to take part in various sports activities. He emphasized the importance of events like SuperH™, stating, "We can help so many people thanks to the money raised through events like SuperH™. We are thankful for another year of support."
Empowering Lives Through Sports
The SuperH™ event includes a 5K run and a one-mile fun run, making it accessible for everyone. For families like the Icochea family, who have seen firsthand the positive impact of adaptive sports, this event is much more than a fundraiser. "Adaptive sports have made such a difference in Adrian's life. They've helped him build confidence, independence, and a real sense of belonging," shared parents Marta and Jose Icochea. They highlighted that such programs don’t just help the athletes, but foster a supportive community that embraces everyone.
MedStar NRH offers an array of adaptive sports, such as wheelchair basketball, rugby, tennis, cycling, sled hockey, and more, all at no cost to participants. The organization is committed to ensuring that individuals with physical disabilities have comprehensive access to coaching, training, and the necessary equipment, plus support for travel to competitions. From beginners to those striving for competitive excellence, adaptive sports programs cater to all skill levels.
Bringing the Community Together
Harry Freedman, the co-founder of SuperH™, expressed his pride in the event’s growth over the past 23 years. He eagerly anticipates the lively post-race celebration that includes fun food, live music, and exciting giveaways. “I appreciate all the support we have received from our sponsors, donors, and those who register. I personally know how vital adaptive sports can be to someone’s recovery and I’m thankful I can help give back in some small ways,” Harry stated.
Over two decades, SuperH™ has successfully raised over $1 million for adaptive sports and fitness programs, with this year's fundraising goal set at $150,000.
