Mural Art in Practice: Students' Exhibition at BnA_WALL
On April 22, 2026, the Temple University Japan Campus (TUJ), in collaboration with BnA Hotel, will host an opening event at BnA_WALL for student mural projects created during the course "Mural Art in Practice." This course, guided by TokyoDex's Daniel Harris Rosen, allowed nine diverse students to bring their artistic visions to life in a public space. The event promises not just an art exhibition but also a lively series of performances, kicking off at 19:30 until 23:00.
A New Approach to Art Education
Unlike traditional studio-centered courses, "Mural Art in Practice" focuses on direct interactions with clients and public audiences within actual environments. Throughout the semester, students learned to develop concepts and proposals, navigating architectural constraints and contextual considerations, culminating in their final creations.
MAHARO, a guest mentor for the course, emphasizes the importance of this hands-on experience. Reflecting on their own educational journey, MAHARO states, "When I was young, there were few places to learn these skills properly. If a class like this had existed, I would have been thrilled. I'm excited to be shaping the next generation of mural artists."
The Exhibition and Performances
The mural exhibition at BnA_WALL comprises nine distinct works displayed across the main wall and an adjacent gallery space. Each piece offers a contemporary interpretation of the Nihonbashi area, collectively crafting a cohesive visual experience that reflects each artist's unique perspective.
Emily McGarr, an art major at TUJ, reflects on her experiences: "In previous classes, technical skills dominated the curriculum with little focus on real-world application. This class has provided me with practical insights into client communication and the execution of my ideas outside the classroom, boosting my confidence in my artwork."
Students have actively engaged in the mural process using Pebeo's eco-designed acrylic paints, with support from Pebeo Japon, which has facilitated this remarkable project.
Bridging Art and Community
This project aligns with BnA Hotel's ethos of integrating art into living spaces. CEO Yuta Tazawa describes BnA_WALL as a platform that connects artists with society, providing a venue for showcasing talent while offering the public a glimpse into the artistic process.
TUJ’s mission encompasses extending education beyond the classroom, as Kevin Jones, head of the media arts department, points out. He highlights this mural project as a significant opportunity for students to gain real-world experience while nurturing collaboration and confidence as artists.
At 19:45, attendees can engage with student artists during a presentation. Following this, several live performances will unfold, showcasing the synergy of art and music in a dynamic cultural exchange.
