Enverus Unveils Its Annual Ranking of America's Top Private Oil and Gas Producers
Enverus Reveals Leading Private Oil and Gas Producers in the U.S.
Enverus, a renowned energy data analytics platform, has recently disclosed its highly anticipated annual ranking of the 100 most significant private oil and gas operators in the United States. This year’s report showcases the major players driving the industry, with a close examination of their production capacities, well counts, and geographic presence.
The leader of the pack, Continental Resources, achieved an impressive production metric of approximately 707 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (Mboe/d). Following closely is Mewbourne Oil, placing second with 575 Mboe/d. Aethon Energy rounded out the top three with 443 Mboe/d. This ranking provides stakeholders a comprehensive perspective on where the industry is heading, particularly as it considers shifts in capital deployment and market evolution.
Drew Depoe, a senior analyst at Enverus Intelligence®, commented on the landscape of private operators, stating that these companies are pivotal in driving a significant share of U.S. upstream activity—much of which operates under the radar. The recent list plays an important role in helping investors and industry professionals grasp the current state of private operators and their influence within the broader market.
Among the highlights from this year’s list are key insights into production types, which include both natural gas and oil outputs, and a breakdown of well counts across different regions. This year’s ranking reflects the diverse landscape of private operators, with representation from prominent areas such as the Rockies, Permian Basin, Eastern U.S., Gulf Coast, and Mid-Continent.
The standing of companies remained stable at the top, with no changes in the ranks of the first five operators compared to the previous year. Noteworthy is the emergence of Flywheel Energy, which climbed from No. 21 last year to No. 6 in this year's rankings. This rapid rise underscores the dynamic nature of sector movements and capital investments currently taking place across the private equity domain.
In terms of production specifics, Continental Resources reported liquid production of 354,022 barrels per day alongside natural gas production reaching 2,117,638 cubic feet per day (Mcf/d). Mewbourne Oil reported an operational average of 21 rigs over the first quarter of 2026, the highest among the top three producers. Aethon Energy stood out particularly for its dominant natural gas production, which spiked to 2,654,744 Mcf/d, reflecting its significant operational capacity and focus on gas extraction.
The report underscores not just raw production figures but analyzes trends regarding rig utilizations and their geographical implications. For instance, as investor interest pivots towards more stable cash flows, many private operators have sought to stimulate and expand their outputs in response to evolving market demands. The full rankings and detailed analysis, which includes production types, liquids versus gas production ratios, and current rig counts, were published in Enverus’s bi-monthly report titled
