About G.GARAGE///
Founded by Kawachi, G.GARAGE/// has quickly gained recognition both nationally and internationally. The theater group focuses on blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with Shakespearean themes, providing a unique perspective on classic works. The
'Shakespeare Do Series', which aims to explore the depths of Shakespeare's plays through a Japanese lens, began with
'Oshiire Hamlet' in 2022, followed by other esteemed performances such as
'Richard II',
'Henry IV Parts 1 & 2', and
'Julius Caesar'.
The 2024 season marked a notable achievement as G.GARAGE/// was invited to perform at the
Craiova International Shakespeare Festival in Romania, where they were the opening act. Their performance received widespread acclaim, further establishing their reputation. They continued their successful journey by performing at the prestigious
Gdańsk Shakespeare Festival in Poland, where only a select few companies are granted the honor of showcasing their work in the main hall.
G.GARAGE/// continues to push boundaries, with further plans to perform at the
Barcelona International Shakespeare Festival and in the birthplace of Shakespeare,
Stratford-upon-Avon, in 2027.
Performance Overview
'The Winter's Tale' is renowned as one of Shakespeare's later romances, delving into profound themes of loss, redemption, and the power of belief. The story follows King Leontes, who is consumed by jealousy and suspicion towards his wife, Hermione, and his childhood friend, Polixenes. This unfounded jealousy leads to catastrophic outcomes, including the loss of his family and abandonment of his newborn daughter.
Sixteen years later, the abandoned daughter,
Perdita, grows up under the care of a shepherd and falls in love with Prince
Florizel of Bohemia. Their love story unfolds against a backdrop of past tragedies, ultimately leading to redemption and reconciliation among the estranged families.
The themes of transformation throughout the seasons — from the harsh winter of tragedy to the bountiful summer of forgiveness — encapsulate a narrative of hope and renewal.
