Innovative CO₂ Utilization in Strawberry Farming



In an exciting initiative, Takuma Corporation, based in Hyogo, in collaboration with Aeon Agri Create Inc., launched a project focused on utilizing CO₂ emissions from waste incineration for strawberry cultivation. This two-year and five-month experiment, which started in November 2023, involved cooperation from Machida City in Japan and took place at the Machida Bioenergy Center (MBEC).

Traditional greenhouse practices typically rely on fossil fuels such as kerosene and heavy oil to control temperature, generate energy, and provide CO₂ for plant growth. This method not only contributes to increased CO₂ emissions but also raises operational costs. Takuma aimed to address these issues with a new approach by developing a tri-generation system that harnesses electricity, heat, and CO₂ from waste processing facilities for greenhouse operations.

To ensure the greenhouse environment was optimized for strawberry growth, Takuma utilized their innovative gas purification system, known as t-CarVe®. This technology effectively removed harmful substances from combustion gases generated during waste incineration and biogas production, delivering an enriched CO₂ stream directly to the greenhouses. Remarkably, this strategy led to a 20% increase in strawberry yield compared to conventional cultivation methods, alongside a reduction of approximately 300 tons of CO₂ emissions and nearly 40% in operational costs.

Following the conclusion of the experiment, a report meeting was held at MBEC, attended by about 20 representatives from Machida City and MBEC. Takuma's team presented their findings and expressed gratitude to the collaborators. Taste tests confirmed that the quality of strawberries produced matched that of those grown in typical farms.

Looking ahead, Takuma plans to expand the tri-generation system nationally, collaborating with local governments and private enterprises. This initiative aims to expedite the transition toward a decarbonized society by effectively utilizing resources from waste processing and biomass energy generation.

Additionally, Takuma has created promotional content including short films on their official YouTube channel and brochures detailing the tri-generation technology, underscoring their commitment to achieving carbon neutrality and sustainable community development. They encourage the public to explore these resources to understand better their contributions to a sustainable future.

This innovative project represents a promising step towards addressing environmental challenges while enhancing agricultural productivity, highlighting the potential for integrating waste management with effective carbon utilization strategies.
