Students Collaborate with Yamatsu to Promote Sakura Products for Chiba's 900th Anniversary

Promoting Sakura Products for Chiba's 900th Anniversary

In 2026, Chiba will celebrate its 900th anniversary, honoring the historical significance of the Chiba clan. Students from Kanda University of Foreign Studies, under the guidance of Professor Tsuruoka in the International Communication course, are collaborating with Yamatsu Co., which specializes in local gifts, in a unique promotional campaign centered around products that represent the region's cherry blossoms.

This initiative aims to enhance the visibility of Chiba's cultural history while introducing cherry blossom-themed products to both locals and visitors. A major highlight of this collaboration will be the students’ booth at the "Chiba Castle Sakura Festival," scheduled for March 28. This festival serves as a gateway to connect visitors with the rich narrative behind Chiba's history and the significance of cherry blossoms.

Interactive Engagement at the Sakura Festival

On the opening day of the festival, student participants will don costumes representing Chiba's historical figures, bringing to life the stories of the past. This experiential marketing strategy aims to enthrall the festival-goers and establish a deeper connection between the products and Chiba's historical figures, particularly Chiba Tadayuki, a pivotal character in the formation of the Kamakura shogunate.

In addition to the festival, from January 10 through the end of March, a stamp rally will be held at various Yamatsu locations, inviting customers to collect stamps by purchasing the thematic Sakura products. This not only encourages customers to engage with the products but also allows students to implement design ideas and promotional strategies, enhancing the customer experience in the stores.

Diverse Sakura Product Lineup

The Sakura product line includes eight different offerings, each intertwined with a unique story about the cherry blossoms and the Chiba clan. Notable products include the "Chiba Tadayuki Moon Star Symbol Cherry Kintsuba" and other traditional sweets thoughtfully packaged with historical motifs. These products not only evoke the essence of spring through their flavors and designs but also contribute to the ongoing narrative of Chiba's rich history.

Opportunities for Students

Through this project, students learn about the sales promotion process in real-world settings. Visiting Yamatsu stores allows them to observe how products are displayed and marketed to customers, deepening their understanding of the challenges and rewards involved in selling. They also gain insights from meetings with professionals at Yamatsu, engaging in discussions that provide practical knowledge beyond textbook theories.

"This project has shown us the intricate processes behind sales promotions. It is our hope that the stories of Chiba's history and the allure of its Sakura products will resonate with everyone through our efforts," stated Chae Hyong-ji, a third-year student and member of the Tsuruoka seminar.

A Collective Celebration of Local Culture

Yamatsu Co., founded with the vision of delivering the delights of Chiba, aligns closely with the educational objectives of Kanda University of Foreign Studies, fostering collaborations that amplify regional culture and heritage. With the Chiba 900th anniversary in sight, this partnership aims to highlight historical narratives and create a memorable experience for visitors through compelling, culturally-rich products and events.

As we approach this significant milestone, the collaborative efforts between academia and local businesses like Yamatsu demonstrate the powerful potential of engaging students in meaningful promotional activities. Together, they are dedicated to ensuring that both Chiba's history and Sakura's beauty are celebrated far and wide.
