Lutzie 43 Foundation Hosts Safe Driving Summit at Calhoun High School

The Lutzie 43 Foundation is gearing up to present a Safe Driving Summit aimed at educating students on the importance of safe driving practices. This impactful event will take place at Calhoun High School in Calhoun, Georgia, on Friday, November 21, just in time to raise awareness ahead of the busy holiday travel season. This summit is crucial given the spike in road traffic incidents during this time of year, making it an ideal moment to emphasize safe driving choices to local youth.

The foundation was established in memory of Philip Lutzenkirchen, a former Auburn University football player who tragically lost his life due to a distracted and impaired driving accident in 2014. Its mission is to inspire young drivers to avoid dangerous behaviors behind the wheel, paving the way for safer roads across the region. The Safe Driving Summit will feature poignant stories and lessons derived from real-world experiences, while also introducing students to the 43 Key Seconds Safe Driving Initiative.

Executive Director Mike Lutzenkirchen explained the summit's significance: "Bringing the Safe Driving Summit to area high schools like Calhoun is a crucial part of our goal to inspire safer driving habits among young drivers across the region and supports our overarching mission to prevent distracted, impaired and unsafe driving." Each summit will unite communities to educate and empower students with the knowledge and tools necessary for safe driving practices.

The event will feature a keynote address by Lutzenkirchen himself, where he will share the heartbreaking personal narrative of his son's death arising from a preventable incident. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to learn from public safety experts, including local first responders who will provide firsthand insights into the consequences of unsafe driving behaviors.

Calhoun High School Principal, Dr. Allison Eubanks, highlighted the alignment between their educational goals and Philip's legacy. "As educators, we continuously strive to help our students make safe and informed choices not just academically, but also in their everyday lives. Philip Lutzenkirchen's legacy and the 43 Key Seconds initiative resonate with our vision of nurturing and protecting our students as they transition into adulthood."

Throughout the day, students will participate in interactive breakout sessions led by various professionals including law enforcement, trauma specialists, and members of the trucking industry. This hands-on experience allows students to gain unique perspectives on road safety while stepping inside a big rig to understand the driver's point of view. These sessions aim to educate students on the serious repercussions of unsafe habits and equip them with vital strategies to steer clear from dangerous situations.

At the conclusion of the summit, all students will receive a 43 Key, a physical token reminding them to take 43 seconds before driving to ensure they are making informed and safe decisions behind the wheel. Dr. Eubanks expressed hope that the summit would foster meaningful discussions about driving safety at home and strengthen community partnerships in ensuring accountability on the road.

The Safe Driving Summit will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Calhoun High School, located at 355 S. River Street, Calhoun, Georgia. This initiative reinforces the foundation’s ongoing efforts to instill a greater sense of responsibility and care among young driver demographics and serves as a vital reminder: safe driving is not just a personal practice but a communal obligation.
