Celebrating Seafarers in Dotonbori
On June 25, the world honors the contributions of seafarers during the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) designated Day of the Seafarer. In Japan, this date is getting a particularly special recognition thanks to AIS Corporation (A.I.S.), an IT company specializing in shipping industry solutions based in Chiyoda, Tokyo.
As part of their initiative called the “6月25日は船員の日。日本定着プロジェクト” (June 25 is the Day of the Seafarer – Japan Establishment Project), AIS will utilize its LED advertising vessel, the LED Ad Cruise, to display heartfelt messages of thanks and support for seafarers. This event will take place on the iconic Dotonbori River in Osaka on June 25, 2026, from 4 PM to 9 PM.
The campaign aims to bring visibility to the often-overlooked work of seafarers, who are vital to our everyday lives and the global economy. While the essential roles of these maritime workers are critical, their importance is frequently overshadowed and not well understood by the general public. AIS hopes to shine a light on these invisible jobs, displaying gratitude towards seafarers and raising awareness of their contributions to society.
Dotonbori, known for its vibrant street life and tourism, offers an ideal backdrop for this initiative. As crowds gather along the riverside, messages collected from across the nation will be transmitted through the LED vessel, effectively conveying appreciation to seafarers. In addition to the live display, a recorded version of these gratitude messages will also be published on AIS’s YouTube channel, “トラくるチャンネル” (Tora Kuru Channel), around mid-June 2026, enabling a wider audience to participate in acknowledging seafarers’ vital roles.
The LED Ad Cruise is equipped with high-definition LED screens capable of displaying both static images and videos, ensuring the messages reach the attention of many passersby. This unique form of communication makes it possible to deliver the appreciation for seafarers in a visually engaging manner.
Why June 25 Matters
June 25 is not just another date; it commemorates the Manila Conference held in 2010, where the IMO formally declared the Day of the Seafarer. This global celebration serves as a reminder of how seafarers play a crucial role in the shipping industry and, by extension, our daily lives. The event directly contributes to raising awareness about the importance of maritime professions and the dedication of these individuals.
Participants and Support
AIS's campaign is supported by numerous institutions, including various maritime technical colleges and organizations dedicated to advancing the knowledge and practices within the shipping industry. These partners aim to foster an understanding of seafarer professions among students and the general public.
Through this initiative, AIS seeks not only to honor seafarers but also hopes it will spark a dialogue about the maritime industry, encouraging potential students to explore careers within this vital sector.
Looking Ahead
Mark your calendars for June 25, 2026, to witness the convergence of technology and heartfelt gratitude along the Dotonbori River. By shining a light on the essential work of seafarers, AIS aims to inspire future generations to appreciate and perhaps even pursue careers in the maritime field.
In addition to reinforcing respectful recognition of seafarers, the hopes are that this awareness campaign will also contribute significantly toward enhancing public comprehension of maritime work and its associated significance in modern society.
